Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
The read me files usually point you to where to place things. Also Steve Shanks has a run down on poser files as a tut in poserworld. And there is also one here, and just at the moment I am ashamed to say I can't remember who did it, but its like a chart, and easy to follow.
The greatest part of wisdom is learning to develop the ineffable genius of extracting the "neither here nor there" out of any situation...."
Usually in download zip files there's a file called README or something named very similar. These files contain information on where to load the stuff into your Poser directory. You should follow those directions first. Secondly, if you study the manuals or info on the net you will see that certain file types do certain jobs and thus belong in certain directories. Hope that clears it up a bit for you. I know it's confusing at first.
I appreciate all the help and the comments..but i'm still getting nowhere with this...the addy for poserworld given is coming up page not displayed..and as for figuring out how to make these dress obj files' i've downloaded to actually conform to the poser4 female like they are supposed to..its just not working..I guess i'm just not as bright as the average bear..lol..any more suggestions, help, tutorials etc anyone can suggest would be so immensely appreciated..
First..thank you Crescent..for the help ..What i've been working with is an obj file from Serge Marck..the P4 long dress..longdress1.zip from www.poserfashion.net..let me say i'm sure its nothing wrong with that file..its just that this is all so new to me and i am just not understanding what it is i'm supposed to do. So far, i have the obj file in my poser/runtime/geometries folder in a folder named Marck..and the cr2 and rsr for it in the poser/runtime/libraries/character folder..I can import the obj file..get the dress in my document window...but what do i do after that? I can even get the dress there, and the poser4 female figure..but how do i get the dress to attach to her? I tried to conform to figure but its not highlighted and so i can't..any suggestions as to what i'm doing wrong would be appreciated..i've been working on this since i got up this morning and i'm really frustated ..hmmm...and i thought it was going to be so simple..lol..thanks!
Hmmm ... you may need to open up the .cr2 file and look at the line that points to the object. I can't remember exactly what the line looks like off-hand, but it says something like figure :runtime:geometry ... Wherever that line points to, that is where you need to save the .obj file. Here's one problem: You do not import the object. You go to the figure library (those thumbnails off on the right hand side where you'd load Posette, etc.) and go to your Characters folder, then Marck and click on the dress, then click on the doublecheck mark on the bottom to load the dress in addition to the figure already in the scene. If you put the .obj in the right place, the dress will load when you hit the thumbnail then the double checkmarks. At that point, it is a figure, not an object, and will be conformable. It's easy once you do it a few times. ;-)

you are not supposed to import the .obj file, you need to load the file through the library. that is the only way to get a posable figure. check out the tutorials on my web page, they are designed for beginners.Okay, I downloaded the rddress.zip file to take a look at it. (I wasn't sure which particular dress you were looking at, so if you don't have it, please grab it.) I extracted the files to a random directory just so I could look at all of them. I opened up the rdbelt.cr2 with Notepad. The line that indicates where the rdbelt.obj needs to go says: figureResFile :Runtime:Geometries:marck:rdbelt.obj That means that I need to create a folder called marck in the RuntimeGeometries folder. Please make sure to keep the name all lower case. Poser is case sensitive. Looking at all of the other .cr2 files, they all indicate that the corresponding .obj files need to be in ..RuntimeGeometriesmarck folder. Save all the .obj files there. All of the .cr2 and .rsr files need to go into RuntimeLibrariesCharacter[whatever folder you want] The .jpg files are templates. You can put them wherever you want. The default is RuntimeTextures[whatever folder you like] You can color them and save them under different names. I'll assume that you saved the .cr2 and .rsr files in RuntimeLibrariesCharactersmarck. If you go into Poser and click on the libraries on the right, you'd go into Figures: Characters: Female to get to Posette. (IIRC, I don't have Poser in front of me.) To get the dress, you'd go to Figures: Characters: marck. You should see the dress, the belt and the vest there. Click on the dress, then hit the double checkmark to load the dress as the second figure in the scene. Make sure the dress is selected and go to the menu - Figure: Conform To. Have it conform to Figure 1. Do the same for the belt and the vest. If you still need help, I can send some screen shots. The location information is in the README file in that .zip as well.
well..WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO and thank you Crescent!! I have been at this for hours and hours and hours today and wow....now that i got it..thanks to you...its very simple after all..I can't tell you how much i appreciate your help..I made the mistake of putting the cr2 and rsr files into the poser/runtime/libraries/character folder..but never made one more folder and it just wasn't showing up in my libraries at all..now that i added a new folder in that character folder named marck, there it is...and it works..it conforms to the figure as its supposed to and i can't tell you how thrilled and relieved i am..and thankful to you and everyone else who has replied and helped me with this...geesh..i do feel pretty silly right now for not having gotten that hours earlier on but i bet i'll never make that mistake again..hehe..again, thank you!!

Hi..i just spent hours ..AGAIN..trying to figure out something in Poser..i'm starting to feel very frustrated..lol..Here's my question..I have downloaded some fantastic obj files for dresses for the poser4 female from various sites..now..how do i get those dresses to load into poser and work on a figure? Is there a way to get them into my clothing library to use over again or do i need to import it each time i want to use it? I've read a couple of tutorials..one on creating props..one on conforming clothing figures..and i'm so so lost..is there anyone who can give me some pointers or lead me to a tutorial that i can actually get to work? Is it as hard as it seems or am i missing some easy step? please help..i'm about to give up and just continue using the clothing items already in the library..sighhhh..thanks for any help i can get!
