Hey there :) We had a thread on C&D about what to do with the galleries and the issues of multiple software systems being used. I posted a reply in there with suggestions and AprilYSH mentioned we might want to discuss it here. So my reply is right after this one.. and a link to the orig thread is here.

Well, I think the hot20 is better this way - it kind of keeps the inadvertent voting of cool thumbnails down.

As for the divisions - I think the community is evolving - more people are using Poser/Bryce, Poser/Max or Max/Photoshop and so on. A change would be cool. Some of them I would like to see.

  • A separate input box for credits.
  • A separate input box for the description
  • A separate input box for the tech info - software used and so on
  • A drop down for the software used to "render"
  • An HTML checkbox like on posts.. so we can format the above.

Folks could filter on what they like to see anyway, but the galleries reflect the realities. Then the OUTPUT could be be more like this...

yeah, I am sure it would be a pain to change the code so radically :)

Yeah, I was following that thread. How is this really different beside the two extra text input fields and the new layout? I don't see how it changes the current divisions by software. Russell

The 2 new text fields are a good idea. IF they are implemented, I'd suggest a 'default' text in the credit field along the lines of "Thanks to all those whose freestuff contributions made this possible" and the ability to modify it to include specifics, or delete it in case the artist made everything him/herself. If that generic credit were always present, it should at least stop some of the bitching about not getting any credit at all in some quarters.
As far as the sorting options are concerned, a few more such as by 'theme' would be a good idea. I don't think it's a good idea to remove any of the existing ones. More options rather than fewer is always the way to go. The HTML formating option for the text would be really welcome.
As far as the 'theme' or other keyword type searching is concerned, it would be nice if there were some way to encourage people to actually use the 'keywords' input area, so many don't seem to bother at all (self also guilty as charged - trying to change that) & if they don't use the field, it sure won't come up in any keyword searches.

As I said in the previous thread, I think if we were able to click on multiple categories, then a lot of this would be solved. This way images that may be in a less viewed gallery, may get more hits because they also incorporated some poser elements for instance. I ususally use 3d max and would actually post my images there because most of the work was done there. However, I put them in poser (and yes, they do contain poser elements) because I'll get more traffic that way and hence more feedback. However that doesn't allow me to then get the imput of those only viewing 3d max images. I've seen the way others deal with this, and that's by posting two images of the same thing. One in one gallery and one in the other. That wastes your disk space and viewer's time. By being able to click on multiple program or sections, we can elimate all this.

Putting images in the wrong gallery will just get it moved back to where it belongs by a moderator, and get you a warning. Russell

Who's talking about putting images in the wrong gallery....I'm talking about images that incorporate more than one program and hence more than one gallery selection.

dragontales.... that is why there is a mixed medium gallery.....
