The answer is ..... yes and no :)

The Pro Pack can be used to make avatars. Remember that to be effective they should be low polygon based. A good rule of thumb is under 2000. Posette is a little over 16000, Vickie just under 29,000. You can make avatars with these figures but when you load them into an online world be sure to take a packed lunch to eat whilst you wait for it to load. Its also best to prepare some good comeback lines to respond to the other users when their keyboards have finally unfrozen and they compliment you on your choice of virtual persona. :)

You can animate your avatar in the Pro Pack and export it to the Viewpoint format that the world builder requires to create the actual avatar file. You will then need to write the java script to make your animations work.

The AvLab program will enable you to create an avatar from a set of body parts, not I grant you limitless but with more than sufficient combinations and adjustment to create something personal. You can if you feel the world is ready for it add your face to it realistically mapped to the 3D head. Select from a wide range of animations, click the publish button and you are done. If you set the details in the preferences it will upload the full file set directly to your web site.

So is the AvLab essential for participation in Atmosphere worlds? .... Nope, you can go in with the default Adobe avatar or one of the many that are available from other users if they want to share.

Are AvLab and the Pro Pack the only way of building avatars.... nope, you can create them in the Adobe builder. You will be limited to using primitives or importing Viewpoint files if you have them.

As with many questions like these, the answer will depend a lot on what you want to do with the program.

I just purchased AL the other day. While I haven't had much time to play with it, it is a good program. As for using PPP to achieve the same things ... you can, BUT you'll have to use ONLY low polygon models, and then you won't get great results since the joints on most of the models after exporting are strange. I've said in other threads that I think the program is a bit high priced. But if you've got the extra money. Buy it. It will save you a lot of headaches. AL also comes with many things that PPP does not have. I think that you'll need AL and PPP to get the best results. I hope that CL (Curious Labs) will continue to upgrade the program. Right now it's in my opinion the first pass and could use some improvment. But that will come. I remember Poser One. See how much that has improved and become one of the BEST programs around for a small price. BTW if Curious Labs reads this. I've noticed in the above "weirdmoose" the fingers are exploding. And Adobe needs to get Atmosphere out of Beta and fix many things too. You should be able to just place a NEW avatar in a folder and have it accessed from there instead of having to get it from an FTP site. But this may be so everyone has access to the geometry. I don'y know, since I'm not a programmer. ;-) I hope that answered some of your questions. James

James and all, Sorry for my being a little out of touch yetsterday, I'm actually getting married tomorrow to the sample girl in the Avatar Lab figure library. Too odd eh? Sounds like the scale zones for the fingers need looking at. TYhe way atmosphere works is that a server sends ouit your Avatar from a web location to everyone else in the room with you at the same time. If that were happening from your local machine, it would need to be connected to the web at all times, and potentially expose that machine to hackers. Having the files in a web server keeps the exposure off your local machine, and protected by the web server's security. Kupa

Thanks Steve, that's what I suspected. Congrats!! You should have made this more widely known. The best of luck and hope you have a full life together and that you happily grow old together (Unless you're pulling our legs (insert leg joint parameter here)). Of course you cna creat some wedding avatars and we can congraulate you in a world somewhere. ;-) James
