I know I know ... I should post this in Complaint & Debate - but I think this section is somehow not visited by exact that persons I'm refering here to ... I noticed more and more accesses done with Download Managers at my site :o(. I'm glad it wasn't that much traffic as I expected this month but I have to say that grabbing whole websites is something I really don't like ... You might know I have almost the whole Image-Database from my CD there ... this was planned (in origin) to give undecided people the chance to decide if they can use my CD or not ... if someone grabs this whole site he'll destroy that concept - you all can imagine that this was a lot of work (imaging around 5000 poses) and the whole site is not so small (around 180 MByte). Another point is the mass-download from all of the poses ... well, of course they are there but please think about that you're not the only person on the net (just for the case you never heard the word - it is called Nettiquette). However - I'm enjoying my Poser-free-time :o) - see you next update - will be around beginning of next month with really a lot of Vicky and Mike - poses (I've done that before my holidays ...). Traveler recently installed a new download system on MorphWorld, to prevent the type of harvesting you are decribing. You might try asking him how he did it.

Schlabber.. I think you should know my friend! Speed hasn't improved a bit since the first time I've checked the site out on my very own - when you provided me the link - despite the fact I'm on ISDN at the office! What mass download? The site must be running a script as it doesn't allow me to access a third zip unless a previous one has been downloaded 100% I know you have the html and code knowledge..so do check this out and maybe it's an option you should put for all users my friend! :o) Rena

Hello Rena ..., it's interestant that my site is so slow for you ... It is stored on a German webhost - hmm, if it is that slow I have to think about complaining at my Provider - would you tell me what the max. connection speed (with your ISDN - connection is ??) At the moment I don't use a prevent-mass-downloading script because I somehow believe in this community. Preventing this and that again and again is not the solution ... people have to learn that it is wrong ... not that they can't do it. (Dreamer - I'm nothing but a dreamer ... )

You just won't believe it "S".. on an 128k ISDN line.. it downloads zips at 550k/sec MAX!!! :o( Minimum as low as 120-150k/sec Germany is not that far away from Greece.. which is far more intriguing.. so I guess some in-between server is messing things around or is half way down most of the time.. :o( Rena

Schlabber, I just went to your site, I haven't downloaded anything yet, just wanted to tell you I like the layout of your site :)

Schlabber; yes, you are right. People should just know that it is wrong. Fortunately and unfortunately both, it is most likely not community members who are using the mass download utilities, but horrible cyber parasites, misnamed (I happen to have a great deal of respect for physical world arachnids) spiders. These people use mass harvesting tools to gather downloadable materials. I'm not sure what they do with them when they get them, but I imagine they do something like build databases with them to be sold, or compile on CD to be auctioned off. Most of them probably only have a vague idea of what they are downloading, and most likely (I imagine) sort automatically by keywords and meta tags. You provide so much on your site that it is like a beacon for these things. It is unfortunate, but you will probably need to set up security to prevent such things from happening.

So like a maniac, I've been fighting Vicky and searching everywhere to find a decent bow pose for my goblins. As always, you come through. Thank you SO much! Frustration ebbs happily away.

I am one of "those" parasites - and I use a site downloader quite frequently, for a number of reasons. Now, to be fair I don't use it when I suspect someone will have bandwidth problems to try and be fair to them.

As to why? Lot's of reasons:

• Many websites are maintained badly. The content disappears or gets replaced with no later ability to get to it. Often having a link to the site is later useless. I grab 'em, slam 'em onto a CD and file them away. Nice and easy.
• It is simply much easier/faster for me to evaluate the contents on my own drives.
• I know in advance I want it all. For instance I often grab entire modeling portfolios of models. I know in advance I want all the images... and this is a fast way to get them.
• The site is designed so badly that I have no urge to try and navigate it by hand. I let the software grab it all them I look at the images and files with better tools than a web browser.

I always know the site I am grabbing, and why I am doing it. I also know lots of others who use these tools and the are similar, they know they want the site, so they go get it.

Alternately, I also use a download manager. When I go to grab a file is makes multiple connections to the server and grabs that way. My throughput goes WAY up and the net amount of transfer is the same.

Now, can these things be used irresponsibly? Sure.Are they always used that way? Nope.

I use Download Accellerator and the only reason i do is because of my 56k connection. Being in UK, my connection times out after 2 hours so if the file is reasonably big and i download it by the normal, save as window then, if not completely downloaded when i time out i lose it. Hence i use download accelerator so that i have the option to resume a broken download. As for mass stripping of sites, not all sites will allow DA, renderosity free is an example, and the maximum files i download at any one time is two, YES two, reason is my connection will only give me a max of 4k/sec download and any more that 2 downloads at a time severly cripples it to about 1-2k/sec. I know there are options for Cable and adsl etc but where i live in the North of Scotland, i can only get 56k and a poor one at that. So i hope you understand that, all these download strippers are not all super fast connections, it would take me about 12 hours to download your site, and i would have to sit up and reconnect after 2 hours so really couldnt see that happening. Anyways i love your site, and your poses and just download what i need at that time. Looking for Vicky Poses and i found them :)
