I have a chart that should help you figure out where to put your items. If you detail the files you need to place, I can be more specific.

Well let's see. Just what are you adding to your Poser library? If you downloaded something, you usually get a readme file telling you just how to install it. Sometimes you can just unzip the file and it goes where it should. I usually unzip everything to a temporary folder and then look for readme files for instructions.

yep keep the zip which has the readme in it. Also, later you'll know who to thank and if there are restrictions on the use of the item you have. also I have a nice chart that shows where the different Poser file types go. good luck.

I have a few screenshots to share that might hopefully help you avoid some pitfalls I ran into when trying to organize a massive Poser collection. The first screenshot shotws my Characters Menu... It's not too bad yet. (Remember I still haven't reinstalled all my superhero collection yet.)

Geesh we have that stupid Renderosity banner instead of the picture I uploaded. Hopefully you will see my screenshot eventually. Here is a section of my Pose menu. You can easily see your poses and select them.

I swear I must have a Million Poses... look at the Pose menu....The names of the poses are chopped off after 7 or 8 characters, and it becomes almost impossible to know what is in the menu.

Now here is one of the "sub categories" of my Pose Menu. See the little slider by the red arrow? You can barely get ahold of it in order to select your poses. I am not sure if there is a solution to all this. Poser seems to have a limit of how many folders it can handle before it chops off the names till they are almost impossible to use. Does anyone know of any solutions?

I can give you some more tips when it comes to organzing your Poser stuff. 1.)I create folders for the major categories such as character, pose, props, faces, hair, etc. 2.) I usually create a new folder within those categories for every file I download. 3.) I have begun downloading any thumbnails for the files that I downloaded. That way I can always keep those thumbs within that folder, and use Thumbsplus to see what is in the zip file. Sometimes the artists include the thumbs in the zip, sometimes they don't. 4.) I create another folder structure for the unzipped files. So if I have "new downloads," I have "new downloads undone." It's easy just to copy the entire new downloads folder into the new downloads undone folder. From there I can unzip to temporary folders, and install into Poser. When I'm done, I can delete the entire "new downloads undone" folder because I've kept the zipped files in the "new downloads" folder... I will save the new downloads to CD's 5.) I try to have a CD for every category that I'd establshed before. The only exceptions I might have if is there are two things that logically go together. We have Vicky, Mike, etc... They have textures. We have clothes, props, etc. They have textures. I try whenever possible to keep the "subject and textures" together. So I have a Mike Character folder, and a Mike Textures folder, etc. Does any of this make sense? Bear in mind that my collection is vast. It includes every download in the 3D Comic Collective, and all the downloads to date from Renderosity free stuff, and all the stuff I've bought.

OK, here is my tip: I copy and paste into Microsoft Word. Then I print out such great wisdom for later reading. I have a pretty good sized Poser Tips book in the works.
