I want to get a digital camera but I don't know what kind I should get. Suggestions?

get one with wings. go to dpreview.com for extremely comprehensive listings and reviews. it all depends: you wanna get into photography hardcore? To meddle around and make some nice stuff when you have the time? A pint and shoot camera? etc. check thye link out.

oh, what I want from the camera? I guess that would be helpful... basically I'm looking for something as close as I can get to a good SLR film camera with manual aperture, focus, etc. I can be flexible on price, so long as it's worth it. thanks for your comments!

I have a Nikon Coolpix 990 and I think it's as close as you can get to a SLR without going into the Thousands of Bucks Universe. It has apperture/speed control, white balance (which is very important for a digi-cam), exceptional macro (good for textures) and countless features more. The new model, the 995, has a connection for studio flashes and something more. On the other hand, Fuji and Sony have a lot of good cameras which you should check before making your decision. claudiow

My two cents worth. The more megapixels the better if you intend to make prints over 5 x 7. The minimum you should accept is 2.1 megapixels. At least 3x optical tele. Choose your camera on what you want to carry around and be careful about battery life and cost. You should expect to spend $600 to $1200 for the camera and 50% more for accessories. The Nikon 5000 with 5.0 megapixels sounds good. I haven't tried one yet. Many companies are filling the space between really good items like the Coolpix 995 and the Pro D-1. Expect to shoot about 500 to 1000 images before you get comfortable with the camera you choose.

I have the coolpix 880...not a bad camera, I've been able to get very creative with it...but its old...the 990 is not bad, they have that new 5000, sony has a good new one as well......I searched and read and compared everything I could find first though.....

As usual I'm gonna recommend the Fuji 4900 / 6900 - go for the 6900 if you've got the cash..... I've raved about it in detail in earlier posts on the subject, and just when I thought I understood all the features I keep finding more. (",)
