Subject: HELP!!! - Poser running super slow!

Hi everyone- Below is an email I sent to the Poser tech people, but since it can sometimes take a while to resolve with them (they have a lot of us asking for help), I was hoping someone else might have had this experience and some idea about how to handle it. ----- Operating System: Windows 2000 Dell 1.8GHZ P4 512 MB RAM In the last few months, my computer has been freezing up while using poser Pro Pack. The problem seems to get worse every time I use the program. Also, when i first start using the program it runs smoothly, but (depending on how many libraries I look through) it begins to slow down and eventually crash. It seems especially problematic with any Poser figure with a changing geometry (where it crashes immedietly), but no matter what, poser eventually moves down to super slow speeds when viewing libraries. In other words the more look between characters, poses, props...etc (even without inserting them into my oser document) the more it slows down, taking as much as a minute to switch between libraries. Eventually it crashes/freezes up. I am using a high-end computer with Windows 2000. When I was running on a win 98 machine with 1/4th the memory and 1/3rd the speed, the program ran more smoothly. Are there any known issues that could make poser run very slowly (almost as if there was a memory leak)? I ahve almost 3GB of poser libraries/geometries in my runtime folder. Could this be part of the problem? I've tried removing and reinstalling the software (while still maintaining my library files - saved externally and then dropped back in) and it still performs poorly. Should I start from scratch and remove everything? I've tried both PPP SR-2 and SR-3, but nothing changes as far as performance is concerned. --- In addition to what I sent them, I discovered to day that if I remove folders from my libraries, it does speed things up a lot when browsing between libraries (Poser also starts faster), but it still crashes when I invoke one of the poser items with a changing geometry. Anyone else have these problems? Thanks. Aharon

You neglected some more important information. How much room is left on the hard drive that contains Poser and your operating system? It seems Poser has some issues with Windows 2000. I was getting messages stating that Poser could not render at the current resolution because there was not enough disk space. I figure 10-20GB is sufficient! I don't know if Curious Labs would bother fixing any Windows 2000 bugs since Windows XP is now the current operating system, and Poser 5 is coming out some day.

any chance you are runing nortaon utilities with protected recycle bin?

Okay, I've got 30 Gigabytes (that's right, GB not megabytes) left. I am not using Norton Utilities. Are you saying that there are known Poser-Windows 2000 Bugs? They don't have any info on this on their site (Curious labs). Thanks. Aharon

Check out some of the threads here at the Poser forum. It's well documented.

Thanks. I found one thread about problems rendering large images. Has anyone reported the same problem I mentioned - major slowdowns? Also, CL suggested I use the python script for compressing my files. Any idea if this will hurt or help? Thanks again. Aharon
