Subject: A new idea: selling prints of the gallery artwork

Over the holiday, I was printing some photos and an idea hit me- what if there was a way to purchase a high-quality print of the images in the Renderosity Gallery? Renderosity could print the image onto 8 1/2 x 11 photographic paper, ship it to the buyer, and the artist who created the image would get a small cut. A button could be added, under the image, that says "Purchase Print", which would add the image to the person's shopping cart (under "Shippable Products"). Then, they could continue to "shop" or look at other images and add more prints. The store could charge $10.00 for a rolled print or $20.00 for a framed print, as well as a small shipping fee. (After all, how much money does it really take to print a picture? The cost would be divided between the pack of paper and the color ink.) I don't know how easy it would be to do this- could you use the existing gallery image or would you need a high-res Photoshop file to get the best results? But, it could be a good way to raise money for the site. And, I know that I would probably buy prints of some of the incredible artwork found in the galleries. --John

The images would not necessarily need to be Photoshop files, but they would need to be high-res. To print an 8 x 10" image at a decent 300 dpi resolution would require the image to be at least 2400 x 3000 pixels. The larger the desired print, the larger the original would need to be. Most images in the gallery are (thankfully, for those of us on dial-up!) much smaller than that. :) Happy Holidays!

As I mentioned in another thread, am looking at printing a single copy of one of my own pictures. It might be cheaper if this site had a local high end company taking multiple orders. The problem is unless its printed with a fairly high end printer, there will be issues with ink fade in just a few years and the bubblejet types are not waterproof. If they got a very high end 'giclee' printing company that could print on canvass id definately take a look. They cost well over $100 (up to $300) for a single print, but maybe renderosity with 50,000 members could make it worth a significant price drop. Those files will be huge though, at 34in wide canvass, thats 10,000 pixels wide (300dpi). Id guess on my good machine at home, 7 to 30 days render.
