Subject: Texturing Problems

DexPac ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 2:48 PM · edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 3:09 AM

I imported a .3ds file into poser but when I apply a texture to it nothing happens, the texture does'nt appear at all. I tried importing it as a .obj file but got the same result. Does anyone know how to fix this?

It has no UV cordinates. You need the UVMapper in FreeSection and Map it. But you have to convert to OBJ first.

DexPac ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 3:38 PM

Yeah I converted it and made a UV map for it but when I apply it to my object it does'nt show up.

brittmccary ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 3:41 PM

Ehh then I have the possible answer for ya! (One of my MANY errors!!), - your model is probably in-side-out. Don't ask me how you can find out that it is, - but save it "in-side-out" out of UV-mapper, - and voila, - your texture will appear! Britt

steveshanks ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 4:05 PM

did you save the obj from uvmapper after you made the map or just the map......either way post the steps you took and by tomorow we'll have it textured and working in poser garunteed :o)......Steve

DexPac ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 4:23 PM

ok first I imported the object into poser as a .dxf than exported as a .obj. Then I loaded it in UV mapper and created a texture map for it. Than I went back to poser loaded the .obj version of my model and applied the texture to it but nothing changes. It does'nt show up after rendering the object either.

shadowcat ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 4:51 PM

delete the .rsr file that is partnered with the .obj

DexPac ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:00 PM

there is'nt a .rsr file.

shadowcat ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:03 PM

did you check the box "apply texture to all materials"?

DexPac ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:06 PM

yep

shadowcat ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:09 PM

hmmm, baffled, since to mentioned that you resaved the model after the remapping (a step sometimes overlooked) try opening with UVmapper and resaving with a different name?

shadowcat ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:10 PM
  • you mentioned

brittmccary ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:10 PM

I vote for my solution... :) I suspect your model is "in-side-out" and that your texture is on the inside of it. Britt

DexPac ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:14 PM

how do I turn it rigt side out? And I should mention this happens with just about every model I import so maybe it's just a problem with my program.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:19 PM

Perhaps we're overlooking the obvious. Is your Document Display Style set to Texture-shaded mode (CTRL-9)? Does the model appear textured when you render?

brittmccary ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:24 PM

No, it happens with all my amapi created obj's also. So it's something with the 3dS files, - now... if I only could remember what box to check in the UV mapper save file menu. ponder, ponder Is it "reverse winding order" I wonder???

shadowcat ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:33 PM
  1. not a reversed normals problem, cuz he has not said the .obj is invisible just that the texture doesn't show 2. not texture shaded problem, cuz he says the terxture doesn't show when rendered 3. not due to a lack of UV coordinats, cuz he said he resaved the model after mapping 4. not a .rsr problem, cuz there is no .rsr I love a good puzzle, so if you want (and can) send me the .obj file. maybe I can figure it out. iishadowcatii@aol.com

DexPac ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:34 PM

no it does'nt show up after render or in texture-shaded either.

brittmccary ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:36 PM

shadowcat. THat is exactly what happens with the models I make. The models ARE visible, - and it almost drove me insane, because no matter how much I tried, the texture didn't show. I think it was PhilC who put me in the right direction. I posted here in the forum and got the answer here. So the the "truth is out there" lol Somewhere. I keep looking...

DexPac ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:42 PM

thanks brittmccary it worked. And Thanks to everybody else who tried to help.

brittmccary ( ) posted Sun, 30 December 2001 at 5:52 PM

Glad I could help! :) It makes me feel a bit better after all the nagging I've been doing in this forum! :) Just make it a standard procedure to save your UV-mapped models with that box checked.
