Subject: How to make a snow storn (including a repeating loop snow storm easy!)

Kixum ( ) posted Tue, 08 January 2002 at 12:01 AM · edited Fri, 20 September 2024 at 3:37 AM

In respect to a thread that Azchip and I have been talking about and other previous comments, I have some images here to upload which show one possible and cool funcion of the particle generator in C. After some thinking, I think it would be possible to duplicate a particle generator with starting and end times that mate up. Then a repeating loop for a snow storm could very easily be achieved if it used the same seed. You'd just have to be a little smart to get your filming times correct. This is only one small example of what the particle generator can do. It can be very very powerful. I've had very good luck with smoke.

The Result. If I would have put more than two seconds into the snowflake for the texture, they would look a whole lot snazzier. Hope this was interesting. Oh and By The Way, I hope to have the CD catelog on the net by Thursday. It's been a nightmare around here lately. -Kix

Kixum - I wouldn't mind seeing some of your "smoke" work.

Great solution!

Very cool, Kix. It does look like Carrara's particle generator is pretty groovy. I'm really impressed with how well it seems to handle the transparency on the snow-flake map, too.

A Smoke Example. I used circles in the tranparency channel and bleared the particles.

Now I understand how to make the particle system do something other than colored diamonds! Using the Custom Shape Tool in Photoshop 6 can produce some interesting transparency/glow masks.
