Subject: Mesh smoothing when importing OBJ?

When importing an obj poser automatically smoothes the mesh. What if I don's want the mesh smoothed. I want sharp corners! Where do I poke poser to get sharp edges?

It used to be that 3DMF didn't get smoothed. Also you could play with the smooting groups in the obj files. I have not really tried this.

I think you put "s off" after the first group in the OBJ. This only works for custom figure files that are accessed from the geometries directory, and not an imported OBJ.

Nerd- The only solution I know is to subdivide the mesh close to the corner you want sharp. Sort of a real pain, if you do it (the subdividing) in RDS5 it will make a whole lot of semi-bad polygons too, at no extra charge.

To amplify Nurds reply:- I use a very small bevel on the edges of the planes that I want to look flat. Regards PhilC

When I was writing my RSR2OBJ utility, I found that putting s on and s off in the .OBJ file seemed to make no difference in the resulting mesh .RSR file.

PhilC, Let me get this. Put in an extra row of faces (real small) They will "absorb" the smooth and leave me with a sharp edge.

Have you looked at importing the object as 3dmf? Last time I tried (poser 3) it didn't smooth at all. This may have been fixed, but I don't rember any mention of changes to it.

What I ended up doing was this, incase any body has the same trouble. In the 3D editor i seperated the mesh at the edge into two groups. Then imported it into poser. Then I used the grouping tool to put it back together and spawned a prop. Sharp edges. Geez what a pain!
