Subject: A different Hot 20 idea... or not

Below is a part of a message that I posted on an issue being discussed in C&D and thought that this may help resolve the rift in the Hot 20 debate. Don't even know if it is possible, just thought it was a pretty good idea and would throw it into the mix of Community Improvements. "But the Hot 20 seems to serve a purpose to at least some people here, otherwise it would not be used at all, no one would vote, and nothing would be in the top 20. I think one minor change (at least minor in my mind) would eliminate this altogether. When posting an picture, allow the artist to select a "checkbox" that says this image can be voted for the Hot20, in the same fashion as they allow Ratings, Comments and set the Nudity flag. That way persons who don't want anything to do with the Hot 20 can make sure their pictures are not available for voting and those who like the Hot 20 can have there pics voted on." Dunno if it would work, tis just a thought though.

BTW, Thanks for listening :)

I am just full of thoughts today :) Although I am a programmer by trade, I do not know the exact dynamics of this site and its code, but I imagine that by simply looking at a flag set with the image, you could choose to show or not show the button that allows voting? Again, just another thought.

good idea... there are times when I would rather not have an image voted on at all, but then I don't have much of a choice in the matter. and I don't have any clue as to the impact on r'osity, but I wouldn't mind it. it may even cut down on all the vote spamming in the galleries lately... hmmm, let's see what the admins have to say about this...

Easy enough. I'll add it to the big list. Thanks! Russell

I say just dump the stupid thing. It causes way too many problems around here. Personally, I would like a way to keep my stuff from being voted on at all. No ratings, no voting for the Hot 20, just comments. But sadly, the only thing I can turn off are the ratings and comments, people can STILL vote it into the hot 20. The only way I can prevent that is not to post my images at all. Hmmm...now there's a thought...and it's not like anyone would MISS them since nobody ever looks at them anyway... Kate

I posted this in another thread and pasted here for general consumption (or regurgitation...grin)... "Pardon me for being new and speaking out, but it seems to me that using most viewed as the criteria for "Hot 20" is also a waste of time. If people are having their friends vote now, they can just view and refresh their own post over and over (and thus chalk up "views" till thier heart's content...or bordom sets in). IF this community is set on having some sort of competition(s) and IF Hot 20 is one of them, then I would suggest (off the top of my head without giving it deep thought) that R'sity randomly choose 100 members and assign them some sort of Nielson (the TV stuff) status and what THEY vote on for the Hot 20 are the only votes that count. While I realize that some "friends" may be randomly chosen, the odds are in a community of 75,000 that most of the people will be just plain people not looking to vote just for thier friends. Keep the 100 anonymous (of course, they could divulge it) and leave them in that status for one month. Or 3 months, then randomly chose another whole set. Just a thought."
