First off, most downloads include a "readme" file... those files will usually tell you where to pack all the files when you unzip it. Otherwise, your best bet is to hit up the file types tutorial on this fine site; link to the tutorials can be found up top of the page. Regd's, /P

I had the same question a few weeks ago when I started using Poser. Though you will hate to hear this, it is what I did: Read the PDF manual (yes I know it is long!)

You really should look for a readme file for each product you download. Many people have different ways of setting up the resources. You can save yourself grief by setting things up correctly from the start.

I've written up a table explaining the files. What they do. And where they normally go. It will be part of the new FAQ for this forum. And it will be posted sometime this weekend. Unfortunately, People put their files in folders that have unique names. So you really do need to have instructions in order to install someone elses stuff. The way us old timers get around it is to open the .cr2 file and see where the stuff wants to go. Then create the proper folders for it. Hmmmm. That gives me an idea. I'm gonna start a new thread about this. ScottA

Actually, NLP, its pretty simple. When you unzip most things, you get a runtime folder, not unlike the runtime you already have in Poser. Once you open that, youll find subfolders for things like "geometries" and "libraries" that correspond to the ones already in the applications Runtime. From there, just open them one by one and move them to the appropriate place in the application. If you open Characters, for example, and you see something called "DAZ people", and you already have a "DAZ people" folder set up, then youre just moving the contents from one to the other. Its all pretty straightforward, and once youve done it a few times, itll be surprisingly easy.

:) I know what you mean, at first it's a bit....Oh my god what's that..where's it go? Best thing to do is get one of the tutorials that explains what and where the files go. Then do what I did( eventually)...get yourself organised. Sort your downloads into categories ie props, hair, figures , textures or whatever. Then get Aladdins Stuffit expander, 'cause it opens stuff up in whatever folder you're in and it's free. If you're not sure where stuff goes..have a look for files with similar extentions. But as somebody has said there's normally a 'runtime' folder which you can just paste into Poser, then you get a message 'this folder already has a folder called 'runtime' do you wish to replace, etc', just click on yes Hope this has helped you Mon The most important thing is....DON'T PANIC :). as long as you have your original software you can always re-install.

You probably won't find what you need in the manual. You'll search forever and it won't tell you what you need, because each download is so unique and probably goes into a different folder. If the downloads also contain the paths, beginning with Runtime, you don't have to do anything but unzip it to Poser 4. The paths will distribute them to the correct folders automatically. If there are no paths included on the zipped objects, you'll have to place them manually into the folders. In that case, do read the Readme file and it should instruct you how to install them. Unfortunately, not all zipped downloads contain a Readme file. It does make it difficult for all of us, even us oldtimers with Poser. You may have to create new folders in the PoserRuntime directory. But don't worry, once you've gotten more familiar with the file types and Poser in general, you'll get the hang of it. We were all beginners at one time. Melanie

But as somebody has said there's normally a 'runtime' folder which you can just paste into Poser, then you get a message 'this folder already has a folder called 'runtime' do you wish to replace, etc', just click on yes NO!!!! Oh my God, no!! LOL. Youre NOT replacing the Runtime folder; that would delete everything you already have.

melanie ( ) posted Thu, 24 January 2002 at 7:38 PM

Exactly, that's why you want to unzip the contents of the file into the main Poser 4 directory and let the folders fall where they should. Melanie

Virtual site: No, you don't, not on 98 or higher. It only replaces any files that are identically named and in identical sub-folders... such as readme's, on occasion.
