Subject: Help - why am I getting bleedthrough on these transmaps?

Hello all, I purchased several of litluver's 'virtual trees' - they are wonderful! Being an Arboretum manager, I started experimenting with making my own leaf textures and transmaps for his trees - photographing leaves with my digital camera, taking them into photoshop and touching them up and generating transmaps. Mostly they are going great! However, as you can see in the image, on some - a very small percentage - of the leaves I seem to be getting some weird bleed through! Turning highlights down to zero and unchecking the 'apply texture to highlights' box seems to help, but not eliminate, the problem A closeup of the affected area will be in a following message. If I can just get this to work I can hopefully in a couple weeks post a ton of leaf maps for litluvr's trees. Assuming I can finally get my webpage working! Sorry I don't know how to embed the image in the body of the message. Thanks, Goldfire

Here's the closeup. Sorry, I didn't realize the forum software would display the image automatically; when I previewed it, it looked like there was just a link.

Try these settings on the transmapped groups: Trans Max = 100% Trans Falloff = 0.00

Make certain that "Falloff" is .... ZERO

  • and -

Set "Highlight color" to ....... BLACK

  • and -

"Highlight to "ZERO"

Also make sure that the "black" in your map is 0,0,0 RGB ie totally black.

Falloff to 0 did the trick - litluvr had it at 10 on the models, I left it the same. Thanks all! Goldfire

Nifty - what kind of arboretum? indoor, outdoor, tropical? what zone? Was thinking of taking a digicam up to the Bronx Bot garden come springtime :) but to make Bryce leafmats instead. Lyrra PS My dad's an English gardener - its genetic :)

Goldfire, I got into this thread late, but it seems you got your answer. Interesting... I'd thought the trans was at 0. I'll have to make note of that. Glad you like the trees. I've got a few more paks coming out from the initial CD compilation, and then off to create some new ones. I'll look forward to seeing those textures. In the meantime, if you need a home for them, I'd be happy to add them to the Virtual Forest homepage, with full credits to you. Liteluvr

Lyrra, I manage the University of California at Irvine Arboretum in Orange County, California (where Disneyland is). We work a lot with preservation of endagered species. We have 13 acres of outdoor display grounds - we work with plants from South Africa, Baja California and southern CA. Lots of succulents, especially aloe species; wild type bulbs; perennials, and plant groupings from the channel islands off california, the california costal strip, and the mountains of southern CA. Liteluvr, your trees are beautiful, and I'll take you up on that! I have about 10 textures ready including a couple textures for 'fantasy' trees that our fairy-loving friends might like - did you know that when you invert green leaves in photoshop they turn lavender? Discovered that when I was doing the 'inverts' to make the transmaps. Just wait till I go over to the main UCI campus with my digital camera - the center of the campus is a 20 acre park full of trees! UCI's founding chancellor was an agriculture/soil science guy who loved trees. I'm also going to try and get some more bark textures.

This is a WIP - the fairy in front is Thorne's Carly, who obviously needs to be raised a bit to get her hands and feet out of the ground. The render is unretouched. The ground and pool are from George deep's morphmountain set; the trees are liteluvr's with a 'gold leaf' texture I made in photoshop applied for the bark and the aforementioned 'fantastic' leaf textures. What do ya all think?

You might try to spin out some silver colored foliage to be used as mithril leaves for all our Tolkein lovers out there. My email is liteluvr@yahoo.com. Let me know how you want to post the files and we'll work it out.

... why "raise" her. It appears that she is sitting in tall grass. One of the things I don't like about many renderings is that Poser people almost always look like they are sitting (standing) on a hard surface, which , in the real world, they are not necessarily doing. [ok, I'll wait a minute while you unravel that last sentence ... sorry ... it just came out that way.] IOW - It looks good the way it is. IMVHO! cheers, dr geep ;=]
