Subject: Uncalled for Gallery comments by OZGOD

Attached Link: http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=133856&Start=1&Artist=DIMENSION%5FX&ByArtist=

I have just become a vicitim of an uncold for comment made by Ozgod on my art work.

I recall I have had words with this person before at the forums and he is not able to understand. I have asked this person to remove his comments from my render and informed both the moderators and Admins here !

Is this person annoying other artists like he has done to me?

What can we do about it ?

FaerieGurl ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 6:10 AM

Personally I don't think comments like that should be removed, I think everyone here should have the right to express their opinion... At very least trolls serve as bad examples... ;o) just my .02 Cookie

DIMENSION_X ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 6:46 AM

I agree people have right to raise their opinion but not insult anyone's work.

This person continue to annoy a few artists work and goes over the top making comments that are uncalled for !! He claims he saw my images 3 times and had to say! Totally no need for that!

If you don't like someones work don't comment and if you do, just be diplomatic about it without insulting someones inteligence!!

This person I understand has been warned before!! So why does he continue and when will he learn!

Trolls should be made aware, if they continue to do this they will be removed from making such comments as this will not be tolerated.

Thats my opinion!!

kjlintner ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 1:01 PM

I agree everyone has a voice, but still, people have the right to be spared such venomous spew also. What is really annoying is the fact that one of his pictures is a poem to his deceased grandmother featuring a naked posette???!!!??? Oh, btw, you might be better taking a complaint like this to another forum. This is the merchant's forum, and this is a gallery complaint. I'm not a mod or an admin here, but you would probably get this noticed quicker in a more appropriate forum =)

FaerieGurl ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 2:29 PM

I'm not saying this guy is right in what he's doing at all, but I went to your gallery and read his comment. What I read seemed to me to be his opinion, maybe not a very kind opinion, but none the less only his opinion. I didn't see him calling names or making threats like so many others do... I for one would much rather let someone's comment stay, so that everyone can see just how ignorant that person is. ;o) Pariah, Where is Dimension X gonna post his/her concern if not here with his/her peers? They took away the only place we were allowed to complain just the other day... That's a whole other complaint though... grin Cookie

Dave71 ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 3:05 PM

I too sometimes get anoying commetns like this for him but it just rolls off of my back, I just read and ignore the comments I don't like. I post for my enjoyment no one elses, good comments make me smile bad comments well........ but I do agree that if you are going to post comments like that about peoples work do it more subjectivley and don't let it degrade to a personal attach which this comment clearly did.

kjlintner ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 4:58 PM

"Where is Dimension X gonna post his/her concern if not here with his/her peers?" Well, I dunno, I suppose you could IM a gallery mod or send email to someone. It just seems kinda moot to file a complaint about a gallery post in the merchant's forum. It doesn't matter though. I was was just trying to be helpful. =) Life without C&D is like life without RadArt. No, wait, he's on the Commune too

DIMENSION_X ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 6:20 PM

Pariah, Dave and Cookie,

Thanks you for all your comments.

I am trying to sell my products like other artists and merchants here by rendering images of mine with other artist products. Frankly this does not help anyone.

I have IM yvette to move this forum message to the main forum.

Unforunately, no matter how annoyed I feel about this, these indivduals will continue to insult other artist including me because they know the TOS and play around with it and the words they use, the Admins are powerless to assist.

We can continuing debating this but I will try to rise above it!

Finally, I would like to thank Yvette for calming my nerves!!

kjlintner ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 6:34 PM

Yvette is a good person. She's always been very helpful.

ClintH ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 8:36 PM

If you ever have problems with your gallery send an E-mail or IM to the forum moderator that the gallery image is in. They will always be glad to listen to your complaint and/or problem. Admins can assist as well but your first contact should be to the moderator. Clint

Ummm... I don't see a problem with his comments, myself. He maybe makes his point a bit overzealously, but it is his point to make. I think he veers toward personal attack but never really gets there. Even what he says about what the image "says about you as a person" is not "uncalled for." When we do work like this and put it out for the public to see, we put more of ourselves into it than we may realize. I'm not saying I agree with what he said, just his right to say it. Frankly I would suggest that if you don't want to receive negative comments on your pictures, don't click the box that allows for comments in the first place. I sometimes get comments that I take more personally than I should...and I have received some that really were downright out of place. I respond in the comments myself... I don't go looking for admins to remove what someone said because I am afraid it may hurt my sales.

Seems like a pretty honest review to me.

pmoores ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 11:48 AM

Just checked out Ozgod's gallery. Had he had some huge beautiful sets of high quality artworks, id think he was just obnoxious. But a quick look there and i know he's in no position to judge anyone. Way i figure it, if he's cutting you down and cant back up his works with his own works, well guess his opinions dont count for much anyways. Had it been one of the cutting edge artists cutting ya down there'd be a different story, but then, those artists wouldnt cut you down anyways.

Oh GAWWWD....how I miss C&D.

Crescent ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 9:39 PM

The comment may be a bit harshly stated, but it a valid critique. The woman does appear to be groping herself, and there is very little expression on her face. Personally, I'd consider the picture a start, but needing work to really shine. Just because someone doesn't have a gallery here does NOT mean they have no right to say anything. I have a few things here, but they're not very good. I'm terrible at color and composition, but I am good at spotting errors in my own stuff and others. Am I not good enough to state an opinion?

Alleycat169 ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 2:13 PM

DimensionX, I have to agree with OZGOD, at least in part. The critique was on the money, and the "opinion" offered did not read as an insult to me. Before you get all righteously indignant you should realize that you have a long way to go as a 3D artist. If you can't handle an honest critique of your work then just disable the comments and ratings. If all you expect is to be adulated and slathered with compliments after posting every new picture, you are deluding yourself. Your piece was simply not that good. There are a lot of people here who always post positive comments to make newbies feel good about themselves. In my opinion this does more harm than good as it overinflates their egos and teaches them nothing. Do you know how many pieces I've posted here that barely get single comment? Check out my gallery sometime and see for yourself. Consider yourself lucky you get any critique at all and leave it at that. Just because you got one bad review is no justification to ban or punish the person who said it. We are all entitled to our opinions and nothing can be done about that, nor should it.

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 3:21 PM

Crescent, there is one faction of "artists" here who truly believe that if you don't have your own gallery filled with perfect images, then your opinions regarding their work have no value. There is another faction that believes any comment that isn't fullsome praise is negative and should not be allowed. And then there are the rest of us who realize that not everyone who loves art is able to create art and that their opinions are not only valid, but sometimes even more valuable than the opinions of another artist. After all, some of us were born to be the audience.

Poppi ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 4:13 PM

I had looked at this render, earlier. I must agree with Ozgod, on this one. There is a good bit more work that could have been done with this render to bring it "to life", and, give it motion and interest. My first impression of it stands, a quick render to advertise a marketplace item. Vicki is way too "out of the box" in this. Lighting could be alot more dramatic, and, the water does not seem very real to me.

Alleycat169 ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 4:41 PM

Interesting "Goldilocks" analogy there Kate. ie: This one's too hot, this one's too cold, but this one is JUST RIGHT. I wasn't aware there were "factions" of artists, you make it sound so sinister and political. Maybe "Schools of thought" was the term you were looking for. It's less divisive than 'Factions'. I've never believed in heaping false praise on adults who should be able to deal with honest constructive criticism. I believe in encouragement and honest analysis. To simply "pat newbies on the head" and say "Oh what a good little artist are you!" without offering any advice on how to improve is just so patronizing it makes me gag when I read it. Do I like compliments myself? Sure, who wouldn't? But I don't live for them, and I don't complain in the forums if I don't get them. As for critical analysis of my own work I tend to take critique from artists, who are at or above my skill level, more seriously than I would from a novice. This is not to say that I don't value the opinions of a layman, but I wouldn't be looking to them for an art lesson and I certainly wouldn't value their opinion over that of an experienced 3D artist. I'm completely self taught on computers and with 3D art and applications, but I did spend 4 years in art school. So I credit that with giving me the knowledge and discipline to teach myself 3D art. Art school is hard in that you are thrown together with other artists who are years beyond your ability level and the best rise to the top quickly. It can be a harsh lesson in survival of the fittest and it only gets harder in the professional world. Teachers do not mollycoddle the weak, if they don't improve they usually are not there the next semester. This is not to be cruel, it is simply to maintain a level of excellence for all to strive for. I'm sorry if this is a bit "hardcore" for most people here, but that's just the way it is in the real world, which is where I try to spend most of my time. ;-) Having seen your beautiful gallery, I'm surprised you say you were born to be the audience. You certainly have done more than your share of participating at a very high skill level.

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 6:02 PM

Alleycat, you're right in that I should probably have said "school of thought." My comments were based on observation of the comments and attitudes of others. I fully agree that patting newcomers on the head and gushing all over their stuff is patronizing. I would even say that on some level it could be considered downright insulting. I had six years of art studies in one form or another and one of the things I learned is that I can't draw my way out of a paper sack, I am a mediocre sculptor, and somewhat ok with oils and watercolors. I also learned that I had a good eye for color and composition, that I was able to look at something and know why it did or didn't work about 75% of the time. That's where I learned that I was more of an art appreciator than an artist. =) Having said that, I'm glad you liked what you saw in my gallery. I'm sure you noticed that I'm still trying to find my signature style. I still don't consider myself a real artist. I'm not really trying to say anything specific with my pictures, no earth shattering message of importance to be found there. My gallery is just illustrations of some of the stories I have rattling around in my skull. Like you, I'm totally self-taught in the realm of CG art and 3D applications. And what a learning experience that has been and still is! Thank you again for the compliment on my gallery. I've made a lot of progress over the past couple of years and I'm glad to see that it shows. =) But I'm still more of an audience member/critic than anything else - at least in MY mind. Kate

Kate, you have some very good points and values there. Well said ;-)

Addressing the comments made by Alleycat169 in regards to patting newbies on the head:

The trend I see (at least in the Bryce gallery) is that the newest images posted by better known members of Renderosity will receive dozens of compliments (well earned in most cases) while at the same time newer members postings receiving no comments at all. Most are simply asking for advice, an honest critique but don't seem to receive it. I've not heard of anyone asking for a pat on the head, just a little attention (in the form of contstructive critisism) from those more talented and experienced.

Alleycat169 ( ) posted Sun, 03 February 2002 at 11:24 AM

I have to say that my experience has been different. When I was new here I used to receive lots of comments and ratings for my work. However, once I disabled the ratings portion the comments dropped off significantly. These day, although my work is much better than it used to be, I barely get 2 or 3 comments even though I ask for them. No sour grapes there, I don't post for the comments. I do find that people will heap compliments on other artists who use their freestuff and store products and list them all in movie style credits that stretch on for paragraphs. They will also pile it on deep with anyone who says "this is my first image". Sometimes it seems as though the worst work gets the most compliments, highest ratings and the least amount of constructive criticism. Comments like "Oh this is sooooo wonderful, keep up the good work!" really do little towards helping someone to improve their work. Soon all you get is a popularity contest with "clics" of people praising each other's work every time they post. I also find that if you express an opinion that is not popular or "PC" in the forums, you will get fewer comments on your work as people hold a grudge against you for expressing how you feel. All this matters not to me, I stay out of those circle jerks. I just can't help commenting when someone complains that someone else should be punished or banned for NOT complimenting them and offering an honest opinion. Which is how this thread started. A little more honest critique and a lot less patronizing praise would serve us all well in the long run. In all honesty I'd rather hear someone ask "How did you do that?" than say "Oh, that's sooooo wonderful!", at least I have an answer for the former. All this is just my humble opine, you're all welcome to disagree with me.

Goldfire ( ) posted Mon, 04 February 2002 at 12:51 PM

Hmmn, Ozgod did come on a bit strong, but some of her technical comments WERE correct. I have always been glad to get comments both positive and negative, especially advice on technique, but using a bit of tact is helpful. Often here on the Net simple courtesy is a forgotton concept.

Gazukull ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 10:38 PM

I think everyone should head over to OZGOD's comments made at Gsimmons N Raider picture. You can see them by checking out the most viewed image. In fact let me just copy and paste it for you. ozgod says: Don't implants require scar tissue? Have you heard of texturing? No, probably because you're totally untalented and wouldn't waste the time and would rather just get off modelling naked chicks because in your own, sad, little life you can't get any, so to vent your sexual frustrations you create 3D, albeit crappy, models to fulfill you're unrequited fantasy. That is it, isn't it? Those morph targets probably aren't even yours, now are they? Nothing in this picture is original is it? Not even the pose I bet. It's pathetically sad that a thesping attempt like this is considered the most view picture. It ranks with trailer park trash. Oh, and please, for the love of God, don't grace us with a Vicki/Poser 4 version or whatever. You'd only be wasting server space, now wouldn't you? Does that seem like a personel attack? /shrug - Gazzy
