Well... coming in here with a name like "kingofwarez" is an exercise in stupidity... Like trying to log onto a discussion in Slashdot as "BillGatesisGawd!" or something... it simply smells of a troll or stunt. As for 'bannees' getting around bans, all one of the admins need do is take the time and identify all the major freebie email services around the 'net. Once identified, lock those domains out from registration. It won't stop 'em all, but it will stop at least 90% of 'em cold... /P
Penguinisto, there are new free email servers every week. What you suggest would take more work than anything. Also, I use a Rocketmail account (now taken over by Yahoo) for all my Internet business. Ban Yahoo, and Hotmail, and you'd lose a lot of members, and tick off a lot of good, solid members.
Remember, kids! Napalm is Nature's Toothpaste!
Perhaps there's a way to check and see how long the account has been active? IP-address banning could work, and can be applied on a case-by case basis. OTOH, most folks who get online use DHCP (Dynamic/Changeable IP addresses), so banning that IP one day may not keep that guy out the next day (This is mostly with modems, though.) Also, banning by IP may accidentally ban legit users who happen to pick up that banned IP dynamically the next time they dial in, simply because they happen to have the same ISP that the 'bannee' has (AOL, Earthlink, etc.) and live in the same general area. Not too awful sure if there's a middle ground there... I understand why you'd want to use hotmail for legit purposes (I hate spam too, and you can't always tell if a site will sell your name or not.) OTOH, if there was a way to tell how long someone has had a hotmail address, or to make the initial registrant wait for, say, three days or so... it would cut down on the number of folks who want to get in just to act stupid. /P
As for banning all freemail accounts, well all I have to say is that I'm using @home/Comcaste internet services and since @Home went belly up and Comcaste is attempting to move our accounts over to their own network my email has been iffy at best. Heck I'm paying for 2 extra IPs and they deleted those mail accounts altogether. The main account works about 50% of the time. Complaints get a stock letter saying basically "we can not add to or modify your account", until the change over is complete. To avoid the loss of mail and interupted service, I've resorted to a freemail account at Yahoo, to insure delivery. Sometimes there IS a good reason to use those accounts and I'd hate to see all of them arbitarailly banned. I've been a member, mostly lurker, here for years and never broken any rules OR participated in wares. Why should I get banned cause my ISP is haveing change over problems?
I think i should mention that there was no user called "kingofwarez" banned here
I was just commenting that many times the people who
violate the rules and get banned have a user name that seems to fit their offense. :-)
They'll always find a way in. You can ban IPs, you can ban free e-mail, you can ban whatever but they'll always find a way in, even if it's just a pocket ZIP drive and a 24-hour Internet cafe. There's no way of keeping them out except one, the one that most people on this foruma seem to adopt anyway: personal intolerance. Every time I see a 'Whare kin i git Viki 2 4 free' post, it's generally answered with a polite 'You can't; you can buy her at Daz; you're about to get banned' and then the thread is locked. What could be more discouraging? I think this works as well as anything would.
And some people get banned because of a particularly stupid infraction they commit -- and then, because their stuff is so popular, they come back on under a new name or two, and everyone pretends its like a whole new person even though its fairly common knowledge that its the bannee whos back, big as life and twice as annoying. Thats the one that amazes me.
You could do a search on Banned and see who pops up. Could be humorous. jon
