Subject: strange slow-down

MaxBeckett ( ) posted Fri, 08 February 2002 at 8:37 AM · edited Tue, 05 November 2024 at 6:18 PM

Hi folks, Last night I added 256 megs of ram to my computer, so I was able to allocated quite a bit to Carrara. Since doing that however I seem to be experiencing a strange slowing down of my computer. When I first open carrara its fine but then as time goes by ( Im talking minutes here) verything gets slower and slower, switching tools and opening dialog boxes and what not takes longer and longer, even dropping back into the finder takes several seconds, and once there moving around the desktop (dropdown menus, etc) is sluggish. Everything returns to normal once I close down Carrara. Anybody ever encounter this? Max

It may be in part in the way you have your Powerbook set up, especially if you are useing any ammount of "virtual" ram on disk (I don't use it). Check your "Sleep Set-up" prefs & set the hard disk to "never" sleep & set the processor for "best" preformance for when the power adapter is connected. If you are working with large mesh objects or large scenes this will be unavoidable as far as I know. Carrara trys to remember the waht it did in the last several steps (in case of "undo" actions) and forgets that it's supposed to be doing something in the present tense! This was more of a problem with RDS but is better in Carrara. If you quit & relaunche it will clear up. Also, when it slows down go up to the Carrara Crescent icon at the upper left of the window to "get info" on Carrara. Just close the pop-up window & then the program seems to be more responsive. Goofy thing but sometimes works.

Hi Will, I already had turned off the virtual memory. I changed the sleep setup as you suggested. I also dropped the number of undos from 16 to 5. I just tried it out. That did seem to help, as does the Crescent icon trick, but it still slows down noticeably after only a few minutes. Not as bad as before, but still enough to be annoying. I cant imagine working that way for several hours on a large project. Im hoping theres something else I can try to minimize this slowing down problem. Thanks for the help. If you think of anyting else, let me know. Max.

What size file & kind of objects do you have in the scene? Are you working with a fully shaded preview in the assembly room? Also turn off "file sharing" in sys folder. I'm leaving from work now, will check in later.

Your problem must be Power Book related. I have C. running on two different Macs (Desktops) with no problem. Check to see if you have any software running in the background including indexing (Sherlock Indexing), or any other extension. Turn Apple Talk and file Shearing off too. I know that you probably turned off all the unnecessary extensions if not create a "Set" with only the once you need for C. This is all I can think of at this time. Sorry I cant be of more help, but I have very limited experience with Power Books.

Okay, I seem to have found a solution. Before adding the extra ram I did in fact create a carrara extension set, but when I added all that ram, I went back to my regular set. Well, last night I went back to my "carrara-set" and that seemed to do the trick. I'm off to pursue my carrara education. Cheers, Max
