Hey everyone,

just wanted to let you know that The Attic has been completely redesigned - my dear "site mate" Swannie has done a wonderful job giving the site a whole new look. We are also currently working on new freebies (such as the texture conversion by Papu and myself) which will be available as soon as possible :)

Please drop by!

Best regards,
Eowyn

Like your site very much Eowyn. You and Swannie are off to a great start this time. Best wishes HARDTWIST

The re-design is definitely an improvement! It looks quite slick. =)

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Sat, 09 February 2002 at 4:04 PM

Your main window shows as a blank white page when I first access the site. It isn't until I click on the navigation links that I can actually see anything in the main window. I'm running NS 4.7, btw, if that helps any. Is there some sort of plugin required to view the front page of your site? If so, what is it?

Kiera ( ) posted Sat, 09 February 2002 at 4:10 PM

Ack, not NS 4.7! That browser is very fast, but deathly noncompliant with the latest HTML versions. Kate, you should consider trying Opera or even Mozilla (an unencumbered free version of Netscape 6, without all the heavy extras, that works with most new site features). Both are very fast and NOT the evil MSIE. =) http://www.opera.com http://www.mozilla.org

Swannie ( ) posted Sat, 09 February 2002 at 4:17 PM

Something went terribly wrong. It all worked perfectly when tested. Hell, Flash files do play in almost every browser when the plugin is downloaded. I will fix it ASAP. But this is very annoying, cos I'm 100% sure it worked. :-( Thanks for letting me know though... Johnnie...

Ok, it should work now in both Opera and Netscape also. Only older versions without Java will have problems maybe, but then again you can get all the latest version almost anywhere. If it does not load it will let you know and you need to download the Flash plugin. If somehow you notice something strange and not working, please inform us about it. Well it works ok with [that "evil"] IE6.0 except that it took about 3 hours to load the home page.
[[[it might be that 300 baud modem yer usin', geep]]]

Very, very nice job.
I shall return!

well, that's why you can go directly to the other pages by either clicking the button on the flash preloader itself or on the navigation bar below that. :-) Thanks for the compliments... Johnnie...

Yeah, I'm quite good at doing that myself, but not in this language. ;-) Although I have loads of English speaking friends and I do manage to pull their leg every now and then. :-) But after working so hard to get the site up and running it was very frustrating to see that something wasn't working right. That takes the fun out of everything. :-) It's always a struggle to make your site fit every browser or you have to make one with only plain text. ;-) But again, hope you like it... Johnnie...

It's a great site, I guess. Personally I can do without Flash stuff, and frames make me feel like I'm looking at the world through blinders.

Swannie's done a great job :) P.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 9:07 AM

The new sitedesign is wonderful - the choice of colors and the frames, very well done. I have been there and tested it with Netscape 6.2, Opera 6 and IE6 and it loads fast in all three browsers and even looks the same in all three browsers. You did a very very good job!

Thank you so much for your compliments, Puntomaus. Have been to your site and it seems we all love black & purple. :-) And when compliments come from someone that can design such a goodlooking site as yours I really treasure it. It's always a risk to make a site work in all browsers, but I tried to make it work as good as possible and where it does fail I have built in a backup, like for example the biography pages. In Opera (even the latest version with Java and all that) it won't show the overlib script, but you can click to go to an ordinairy version of it. At least for me the script fails... Again.. thanks for the kind words about it working in all browsers, how silly that may sound to some :-) but to a webdesigners it means a lot... Finest regards, Johnnie...

I'm on a Mac running Netscape 4.7.8. I get the flash movie intro but when I click on 'free downloads' all I get are the 2 paragraphs but no links to the stuff. I tried in IE 5 and it worked but I absolutely hate the download process and the changed names. Is there anything you can do for me? Oh, BTW, Netscape 6.* is as buggy as hell and I uninstalled it. Aeriol

Swannie ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 12:10 PM

NS 6.* works perfectly for me and many others (amongst them Mac users) I know. It solved a lot of problems that the previous versions had. But anyway, you say no links to the downloads? I have used normal links that work from the very first browser version. And to get to the specific pages you have to click on the images. That function is also exactly the same as a plain text link. The buttons used for the links are used in forms and such, only I have changed the looks on them using CSS. But if your browser doesn't support that, you'll get the normal looking buttons. If you still experience trouble go to the form or mail us and we'll make sure you get what you want. Thousands of people have already downloaded and the last hours many transfers have been going on so it's kinda silly to change it for one problem, if you get my drift. But nevertheless we will make sure you'll get it if you let us know... Finest regards, Johnnie info@theattic.nl

jonfe ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 6:49 AM

First of all, let me say that the new layout is really good; clean, functional and compact. Excellent work there :) As far as the problems stated with NetScape 4.x (i.e in the downloads page) are concerned, I think that they are caused by the fact that NS 4.x will not render input elements (such as buttons, textboxes, checkboxes, radio buttons etc.) unless they are contained in a form. Try adding a FORM tag before your TABLE tag and don't forget to close it afterwards. I think that you don't have to specify any of its attributes (like action, method etc.) in order for it to work, but test it anyway. This will not affect page rendering on IE or NS 6. Button styles in CSS will probably not work on NS 4.x either, but at least your site will still be functional with NetScape 4.x. Jon

Swannie ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 8:32 AM

Well thanks jonfe, been thinking about that myself, cos it seems to work in all the newer browsers. I can add the form tags again and see if that would help. I know that it won't affect the total lay-out, but because it was used for only linking I thought I'd leave it out. But... I'll try everything to make it work for everybody... Off to try and solve the problem Johnnie...

PilotHigh ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 9:39 AM

Thanks Swannie - it works now.

I'm just done updating the site... :-) Glad to see it works for you. It may sound like I only found out because of jonfe, but I was already thinking about that mistake last night, but thanks to jonfe it only confirmed to me what I was expecting also. Technically it's not a mistake, because it only does not work in the "older" browsers, but still... I want it to work on the most used browsers versions. I hope it's ok now... and have fun downloading and let us know what you think by signing the guestbook... *puppy eyes* ;-) Finest regards, Johnnie...

jonfe ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 10:43 AM

It is I who should be doing the 'thanking' here, for all the great free stuff you people generously provide us :) I'm just glad I could help, by confirming what you already knew. Jon
