Subject: Poser on the brain

Strangechilde ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 7:44 AM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 4:51 AM

Okay, this is kind of off topic, but it amused me. So there I was asleep, and I had this dream that I was a villiager in this prosperous sixteenth-century riverside town. This huge gang of brigands came through pillaging. They took everything metal and anything that took their fancy, and then at knifepoint rounded up the townspeople, had us collect our other belongings together, pour oil on them and set fire to them. Including animals. Well, the furniture and books were one thing, but I just couldn't set fire to my good dogs (and in addition to the two I have when I'm awake, in the dream I had about thirteen enormous shaggy lurchers). But I outfoxed those brigands, so I did. I exported the dogs as .obj files and set fire to those, keeping the real dogs hidden. Maybe I can hack my brain with a text editor and fix this... in the meantime, could somebody please upload a very strong cup of coffee to Freestuff? Much obliged.

OOOOOHHH! I wish I had dreams like that, packed with drama. My Poser/life confusions always happen in that semi-dream period just before falling asleep, and the contradiction between logic and illusion always wakes me up.

When I first started using Bryce (1.0, back in the caveman days) I was so obsessed with it that I spent literally all my free time with it, which was a lot since I was unemployed. One overcast Seattle day I was walking down the street and instinctively reached for a mouse to adjust the sky to turn down the haze so I could see Mt. Ranier better. I figured it was time to read a book, or bake some bread or ... anything else, for just a while. At least you were dreaming.

Doh! I meant Mt. Rainier. I shood no beter.

I don't know about you, but sometimes my real life just sucks, while my Poser life, and this community "rock." I'm so much more alive in so many ways since my creativity has been allowed to bust loose. So yes, some nights Poser is in my dreams. And some nights I wake in the middle of the night, work on that drawing, etc.

Agree with Ron exactly. More comments: when I got deeply into programming about 15 years ago, my dreams suddenly became more precise. For instance, I often dreamed about teaching. Before this change, the subject would be sort of vague; what I drew on the blackboard was a kid's superficial idea of how that subject would work, even though I really knew a lot more about it. After that change, what I taught in dreams was fully up with my current state of knowledge, and often included new ideas. Then about 5 years ago I got into graphics. As I began to master that, dreams suddenly switched to cinematic form, with coherent plots and lots of well-formed characters. This was brand-new; previously, dreams had contained only "default" humans as place-holders. These switchovers seem to indicate basic changes in brain wiring.

Ockham, that is a really neat story. I have to tell you one of "irony." My best friend is the one who inspired me the most to pursue my artistic, creative nature once again. First he told me about a Poetry contest at www.poetry.com. That lead to being "published" in a book. (Long story better left for another time maybe). His inspiration led me on the path to Poser. The irony?! My friend is "blind". He can smell, feel, hear, touch, and talk. But his eyes do not see. He's one of the smartest computer persons I know. His computer talks to him, with a program called "Jaws." My friend cannot see, or truly appreciate the art that his encouragement inspired. We talk about it, and he does his best to understand. I just wish Roger "could really see" what he inspired. Ron

[science fiction mode on] Well, we'll just fire up the nanodigitizer, and download those Poser figures we've been working on. The models will be tangible in a few minutes, and then you can let your friend really feel them! Too bad we only have the license for the 10-day duration models. [science-fiction mode off] On the other hand, maybe i'm not dreaming... ?

Some CAD-CAM systems have the ability to mold actual plastic models directly from 3D objects.

Thanks, ockham, i wasn't sure if i'd seen that or not in one of those hundreds of gee-whiz shows i like to watch on Discovery or The Learning Channnel... :^D Now we need the consumer version! And with nanites on the job, the texturing will feel more like real! --Nano whee!

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 4:52 PM

The technology is called 3D printing or rapid prototyping. Consumer versions aren't quite here yet, but ToyBuilders.com provides fabrication services. Just send them your 3D mesh (they accept Poser geometry), and they'll replicate a real-world version.

sigh I have AMAZING dreams... there's got to be something seriously wrong with me. Sometimes I dream in predicate calculus. That... now that's just wrong.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 9:17 PM

Little Dragon, Thank you for that link to Toy Builders. Wow! ::evil green glint in eyes:: Hiram, I know what you mean about "tweaking" skies in THIS world. Strangechilde, the stranger our dreams the more creativity we can pour out. Just make good notes of what your subconscious is up to. Carolly

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 9:48 PM

I dream in movies. Since I rarely have time to watch them while awake, I catch up on a film every week while asleep. I've seen a few movies that, in all likelihood, none of you will ever have opportunity to watch.

My dreams used to pick up bits from any new game I installed - which was pretty strange once when it was uMoria or Hack, one of those ASCII RPG things, being an '@' feels weird.
