Given some of the discussion lately I thought I'd ask for some opinion before decided something. I have this Mike phototexture Dion that I did waaaaay back when I was just learning to texture. The textures work and I've seen it used but has some major flaws. It seem popular enough though that it accounts for the majority of the bandwidth on the site I have him at. Well, I've been working on a new version. Fixing the flaws and adding some new detail .

My dilemna? How to make the new version available without running up an unacceptly high bandwidth charge.

I don't want to put him in the marketplace - I don't think that's fair since he's just an improved version of a texture I've been giving away for free. But I'm afraid to just post him for fear that mass downloading will occur.

Okay here's my idea for a solution. When I get him finished (still have a little bit of seam work to do). I will up load him to my site and give the URL to anyone who asks for it nicely. I will put a message to that effect on the page where the old version is. I won't be able to provide the instant downloads - it may take a day or two for me to reply to e-mails but this way I am hoping to make the new version available to everyone who really wants it for free without totally blowing my bndwidth budget.

What do you think?

Sounds like a good idea to me... and if people can't wait to get the download information then too bad for them... I mean you are giving away your work... :)

Gee, most people won't know how to respond to such generosity. Whatever, you decide, whether it works or not, thanks for the generosity.

With MAT pose files it's about a 2 meg file zipped. Not super high rez - the texture maps are 1450x1450 but decent for anything but real close up shots.

I agree quite wonderfull. I too missed the old texture but hope I don't miss this one!!

Make it available without monetary payment for people who ask (and are polite) that's a great policy. Go for it! :) I never saw this before either! Looks great :)

Just a side note, I've been meaning to tell you for weeks now that your horse textures are really something. I'm currently in the middle of designing a bunch of posters for our local rodeo that's coming up this summer. We always get great comments on our grpahics (he says with all humility), and this year I wanted to go with a stylized, quasi-photorealistic look. Your stuff was a godsend because it walked that great line between real and "superreal". I'll send you a jeg of the finished pieces once the board gets off its ass and approves something.

I sort of worried about the same thing. Supermodel Lori (lo-res Lori) is going to be free in the first issue of the Renderosity magazine, I'd like to make her Free Stuff afterward, but I could see her killing poor BBay Bill's (who host my web site) bandwidth. My answer is going to be to put her in the store at the minimum price, which is $6, I think. On the other hand, maybe I shouldn't have worried, she isn't that much of a figure (only 10,000 pixels), and she can't open her mouth!

Daio, you have a great solution :) I have never seen the Dion texture before, but I will even ask you pretty please with sugar on it, Dion is a great looking texture!

Looks like Dion has plenty of people willing to give him a home. I've got a few more days work on him but I will be sure to let every one know when he is done and where to get him. yay!!!!!! i use dion quite a bit, he is great. :) yeah, he has some seams, but they're workable. a version with no seams would be wonderful. thanks a ton, daio. :)

Daio, I have to say that as a rule I don't buy textures - but I bought your dark horses - and wow :) worth every penny:) I commiserate on the bandwidth thing - it's the main reaosn I'm making stuff for the store. For something I don't use for myself bandwidth is expensive stuff :( Nice work on Dion - better than my Thomas texture :) Lyrra

The Dion texture is great. I have made an image using it and it needed only minor postwork here and there. I would love to see a new version. Friederike
