file_275409.jpg

I am trying to get Poser migrated over to a new 'puter.

After reinstalling Poser4 from CD on the new system, it appears that none of my ".pz3" files work.

All I get is a solid lockup with the window shown above.

Does anyone know why it does this? ... and how do you fix it?

I have tried copying the ".pz3" file to a CD and then copied it onto the new "puter's HDD but Poser still is not happy.

Any assistance on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

no cheers, (this time)

Is Poser on the same drive letter in this new computer as it was on the old one? If you originally had Poser installed on, say, the D: drive, and you move it over to the one-and-only C: drive on this new system, it might be trying to access a drive that doesn't exist. Poser can store a complete file path in PZ3 files, including drive letters. Just a thought.

Thanks, LD, for the speedy response, and the suggestion.

I'll go back and try saving the .pz3 file to the C: drive on the old one and then copy to disk and see if that works.
Yes, I had Poser on D: on old 'puter.

is poser even loading at all? If not re-install, then copy over your library files. try using your .pz3 files as .cr2 files change the extension and put one in a character folder, see if poser will load it that way.

I don't know if this helps, but once you copy a file to a CD it is marked as read only. When you copy it to your hard drive it remains read only unless you go in and change the file attributes.

geep ( ) posted Mon, 18 February 2002 at 1:34 PM

Did that ... changed from "read only" - no difference.

Real Curious(labs) that some of the files that were xfrd over work ok, and others do not. All were xfrd at the same time. Curious, no?
;=]

Will try the .pz3 ---> .cr2 thingy and see if that works.

Thanks, shadow and BAM for your responses.

Heya Geep, have you tried uninstalling Poser off the new puter and reinstalling. If not, before you do try this. If you still have Poser on the old puter copy it over, root files and all subdirectories into a new Poser folder, say PoserOld. Try running the exe for it and see if everything works. On a PC, once you have Poser installed so that there is a reg entry (which even then is not absolutely necessary) you can copy the files to another folder or even another hard drive and run the program (only one at a time though) from there. I always keep a backup copy of my working copy, that way if anything gets screwed or accidentally lost I can copy it back. I also run Pro Pack and Poser 4 this way, plus I have a Pro Pack stripped down version in which I copy stuff over and delete out when done to use when I am working on a huge file that eats up a lot of resources. So, copy the old Poser directory over - if you still have it, and do a test run. If it works, copy the files into the new install Poser folder. If it doesn't, maybe you have a prob with the hard drive - bad clusters or something, run scandisk (if you are on a Mac, someone else will have to help).

And when all else fails, get a Macintosh. (Sorry, I couldn't resist that.)

BTW - "Will try the .pz3 ---> .cr2 thingy and see if that works." It didn't. ******************************************************* Here is what I had to do .... When the .pz3 file is "opened ... and the "No Disk" window pops up ... I started clicking on "Continue" many, many times. It "appears" that Poser is "stuck." BUT, it is not because if you CONTINUE to click on "Continue," the file will eventually load. With some .pz3 filles, I only had to click "Contine" 2 or 3 times before the file would load. Some of the files required clicking on "Continue" 50-60 times! ... and then the .pz3 file would load. I am guessing, but I believe that Poser has all the "links" to figures, lights, cameras, etc. embedded in the .pz3 file and when these "links" do not work, the "No Disk" window pops up. Clicking on "Continue" somehow forces Poser to "search again" for the missing "link." There seems to be a correlation to the number of times that "Continue" must be clicked and the complexity of the .pz3 file. I had to go through each file a click on "Continue" and keep on clicking until the file loaded. Then I saved the file back using the same name. (but in a different folder) I have verified that the newly saved .pz3 files load without any problems. BTW(#2) - I am now using WinXP (from Win98SE) and had never seen this "No Disk" window pop up before in Win98SE. cheers, (finally) dr geep <-------------------------------------------------------(happy again!) ;=]

Glad you got it.

Nance ( ) posted Thu, 21 February 2002 at 6:30 PM

If you just changed drives and the rest of your Poser directory structures remained essentially the same, you can open each of the .pz3's in a text editor and do a global search and replace to change all the drive name references at once -- when you get tired of clicking. ;-)

Thanks Nance, I'm done clicking and all my .pz3 files now load without any problems. cheers, dr geep ;=]
