Subject: Do I have a viable idea? Your input wanted!

Hello, I've recently begun thinking about creating a line of super-detailed models with textures that could be customized by end users into virtually any configuration they want. These models would be large and complex enough to reuire shipment on one or more CDs. Some ideas include: - Castle: 75 to 100 pieces, including towers, wall segments, gates, stairs, inner courtyard building segments, etc. These could be mixed and matched to create many different scenes. Details include full room interiors, windowpanes, stairs inside towers, arrow loops, structural features, etc. - House: Modern Craftsman style home including built-in appliances, fixtures, etc. that could be assembled into one of many arrangements/floorplans - Ship: Pirate ship that could be built up as a small boat or a ship of the line - Aircraft: Fully detailed aircraft down to engine blocks, exposed wiring, instruments, etc. I'm thinking like a Cessna or something. All models would come on CD and include all textures/bumps/etc. I am considering charging $69-149 for each product, since each would be so extensive, the most expensive models having well over a gigabyte of content on them. What do you all think? Would you pay for this sort of product? What would you like to see made? Thanks in advance! Anthony

I would pay this kind of money if it is top quality and I like the style of the model. Do you have some WIP pics?

I am working on this for a different project, but it works for an example. This tower has 3 floor levels (bottom is trapdoor/ladder accessible), fireplaces with chimneys, 2 bathrooms with drains and cesspool, all stairs, windowpanes, arrow loops, etc.

another pic - NOTE: These are not textured and are pretty low-res.

A shot with outer walls hidden, showing some inside detail. The smaller tower contains a spiral staircase, the inner one has the rooms/fireplaces. Passages from each of the 2 upper rooms lead to the 2 bathrooms in this tower.

BTW, I think we have enough castle/house models already. How about a factory or a hospital? With lots of interior?

Ah sorry, I was composing my second reply (yes I'm slow) and didn't see your pics. From the last one I gather that there will be some dungeon and other interior. That is very good.

Dungeons, chapels, kitchens... :-)

Anthony; Are you talking about Poser-compatible, or another program? If Poser, Castles and modern houses, (even a craftsman house) have been done several times. I'd absolutely pay for a modular Pirate ship with decent interiors; lots of scenes come to mind I'd like to do, from sunken-ship/mermaid set to sea battles. I've seen a number of postings looking for good aircrafts with interiors, up to & including commercial aircraft. I don't know if such detail to the engine components is needed, though. Other possibilities might be; Trailers & campers, Ornate Victorian cottages, Painted ladies, or Brownstones, Convenience stores like 7-11 (stocked) or fast-food franchises, Shopping Mall, A movie studio with a variety of sets, Amusement park or carnival, 1950's diner or drive-thru, Casino with showrooms, nightclub or theatre, Incan or Egyptian stone town Showboat or southern plantation Hospital or medical center Etc, etc, etc. My impression is that Poser meshes are more in demand than most programs, (I COULD be wrong?!) and Poser users would likely be happier with lower-rez meshes that render faster. G Just a few suggestions......

Ooops; I knew I was taking too long finding my list - G - should have known I wouldn't be the first reply:-))

Yup, a pirate ship would be nice. Real soon now I will buy the HMS Victory from hankster but I'd like another one (with interior).

I'm talking UV mapped OBJ with maps. Might be too high res for Poser 4, but would work well in any OBJ-friendly app.

I'd go for a pirate ship, with fancy interiors, ship rigging, cannon, lots and lots of detail, I'm ready for it now!

warzog ( ) posted Sat, 23 February 2002 at 2:30 AM

How 'bout a robot kit. Several weapons, legs, arms, cockpits, etc?

Philywebrider ( ) posted Sat, 23 February 2002 at 6:38 AM

Leather-guy mentioned a sunken pirate ship for underwater scenes. A ornate highly detailed Pirate ship, with a sunken ship version sounds great. Check out the childrens books that show the cut-away drawing of old ships, lots of interior, exterior sets. The possiables for different scenes are fantastic, every thing from manning the cannon, lookout in the crows nest, fighting for treasure, moody charactor peices, (male & female) :), mermaids, mermen, seamonsters, giant squid, and more ...stopping to take a breath As you can guess I'm enthusiastic about a PIRATE SHIP. The price for a hi-res multi CD, would be OK as long as it is REALLY Hi quality.

75 to a hundred peices per model sounds great, but it is important the peices are quality work, you can't make up for quality with quantity, focus on the quality, with plenty of details, texture, bump, etc. Some of the scenes I'm seeing on Renderosity are looking terrific. The bench mark is being raised.
