Was searching the net to get updated drivers for my old camera when up popped some popups. One of these started to put a virus on my PC. Fortunately my on line virus checker jumped in and deleted the file immiediately, so not sure which pop up did it. Is this a new thing viruses in pop up ads?

Okay, that's pretty scary. Are you sure the virus scan didn't just pick up on some "harmless" spyware? I haven't heard about this yet. There are some Internet Explorer security holes that have been corrected recently (versions 5.5 and 6.0, which comes stock with XP, are affected). If you're running an unpatched browser of any type, you might be susceptable to viruses-by-pop-up.

Online Now!

Steve Gibson, at GRC.COM has developed uilities to help plug some known XP holes, and has some great online tests to analyze possible weak points in your configuration.

Yes, leather-guy is right, I used GRC utilities and they worked great. Sharen

I'm running win2k and ie5, not 5.5 As I said Mcafee jumped on it straight away,I run the on line version, and I ran a full scan later. My teccie was working on the machine at the time, not me.

Yes, you can get a virus from Pop-ups. If you have a decent anti-virus software, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. They will normally catch them before any damage is done. Just be sure to have updated pattern files at all times.

I have Windows ME, is there a version of this "software" or whatever that will work for me? (I also have seen a program called "Pop-Up Killer" that automatically "kills" new Pop-Ups)... Hope that tid bit helps... :P Lee
