Subject: March Madness... The Art of Juxtaposition.

Alpha ( ) posted Sat, 02 March 2002 at 8:04 AM ยท edited Sat, 16 November 2024 at 10:43 PM

The March Challenge emphasizes a compositional concept that has been a mainstay in the world of Fine Art for centuries. Simply stated, juxtaposition is the arrangement of two or more things together, to suggest a link between them, or emphasize the contrast/deference between them.

There are many ways to interpret this... Juxtaposition can be used in a wide range of situations from humor and satire, to provocative thought and strong social statements. The key is in finding, and/or arranging the elements of your composition in such a way that the various elements you are juxtaposing all work together to convey a message.

Because this focuses on compositional content more than technical execution we think this is going to be one of the most challenging themes we have had in a while. If you need any help, or have any questions... Post Away!

This has potential for some very funny photos. I know I'll never be able to get a shot of this scene now, but I'm reminded of something I once saw which would've been great: A large sign saying "Regional Water Supply", and in front of it was a cow standing knee deep in a muddy, slimey watering hole on the adjacent property. The scene was perfectly composed, but I didn't have a camera with me! Grrr! I can't wait to see what people find!

Looking forward to this one, could be quite a learning curve, & knowing this place it's going to be hilarious too : D

I have seen something of a similar nature to what ASalina has seen. I was in my room at one of the casinos in Las Vegas where there was a sticker on the mirror in the room which said something like this. "In the interest of the conservation of electricity could you please turn off all the room lights prior to leaving your room." The mirror was right near a window that looked out onto the Vegas strip. Now imagine the contrast of the sticker and the lights of Vegas through the window at night. I still laugh to myself when I remember that sticker.

I've alread had a couple of ideas for this one, hopefully I'll get the chance to enter for it this time... Gawd, I HAVE to make time!!! (",) btw, how about this one I witnessed a coupla years ago; guy parks up outside his house, gets out with a sign in his hand that he's had made reading 'No Parking'. Fixes the sign to the wall and goes inside... old couple go past loudly commenting on the state of the world when people can't even read a sign right next to them when parking.... lol. (",)

This kinda reminds me of the damn pharmacuetical commercials (here in the US) Basically they go like this...if you take our medicine for say, an allergy...it'll alleviate the itchy, watery eyes, the sniffeling and sneezing. But then there's ALWAYS this disclaimer at the end that it MIGHT have adverse side effects...like vomiting, irregular bowel movements and severe internal bleeding ...can causes more problems than you originally had!!!
