Subject: Reminder about commercial items and this forum

ScottA ( ) posted Sat, 09 March 2002 at 2:55 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 12:35 AM

Please remember folks. We created the "Product Showcase" forum for you to announce your new or updated commercial items. There have been a few messages that I've had to move. And I want everyone to please be aware of the new policy. I don't like moving messages. And I'm sure it's no fun for you either. Here is the policy again just to refresh your memory: The Product Showcase Forum and Art Gallery are intended for the promotion of any commercially available item offered within the 2D/3D art community. This includes, but is not restricted to Renderosity MarketPlace advertising. Overt advertising of this nature located on any of the other forums/galleries will be transferred to the Product Showcase areas. Posts may be identified as such if they contain statements similar to "Now available at [store]", "On Sale", "For Sale in my Store" or contain direct URLs to e-commerce pages. Artistic images that discreetly credit the makers of commercial items used are not restricted to the showcase areas. Example Credit: [Product] by [Name] [(Store)]. Thanks, ScottA

Help! I try to do images WITH my own products and products I have bought here, as well as other areas... and because it is an art image on my site, I do put the links for the products and sites like I did for Waiting for the Lady.. but I think I can not post a poser image in the poser forum and a vue image in the vue forum, because of my links under my images on my personal site.. right? I really want to get this right, and feel that your post might be, at least partially, directed to me, Scott... so I will wait for your reply before posting any more image urls... with thanks for your patients with my postings! Lyne

Could someone also do something about gallery posts that are nothing more than adds. Some of them are blatently direct in this and contain no actual art nor even make any claims at being art.

Truth has no value without backing by unfounded belief.

Lyne, I can't speak for Scott, but just like I told Sharen of SAMS 3D, you are welcome to post your link and a small picture in the Vue forum. I've never seen or heard anyone in the Vue forum complain about neither your "ads", nor Sharen's, in fact most everyone there seems to enjoy seeing your work, and especially since you always have Vue-specific products.

Lyne, It's all about numbers. This message board (Poser Forum) is so popular and moves so darn fast, that messages get buried very quickly. In order to cut down on this. We created the Product Showcase area for direct product advertising type messages. You can continue to put links to your personal web site here. Along with renders you make using your products. As long as that link deals with a free item. Or an image that you want people to see and give advice about. What we are trying to do is keep the obvious advertising confined to the Product Showcase area so it reduces the amount of ads we see here. Here's an example that might make it clearer for you. This is OK: You create an image with products either you, or someone else is selling. And post it to the gallery with credits given to the makers of those items. Along with the link to your web site. You post an image here on this forum and ask for help to make a certain part of it better. Including a link to your web site. This is NOT OK: You post an image/and or message to the gallery or this forum saying something like "Here's my new item. You can get it now from here". You post a message that states something like "I just updated the so-and so item I'm selling. It now has this new stuff included with it" followed by a direct link to where the item is being sold. We realize there's a bit of a thin line with certain images and messages when it comes to the advertising issue. We will try to be as fair as possible. Hope this makes it clearer. ScottA

What about updates to subscription only sites. They are not free. Shouldn't they be posted in the Product showcase forum as well?

ScottA ( ) posted Sat, 09 March 2002 at 11:37 AM

Good question Lovely Lady. The same rules apply to them. The subscription sites are allowed to post here. As long as they don't target a specific product. It's OK for them to post a message saying come to the site for new stuff. Because it isn't targeting a specific product. It's a general heads up for the communtiy. We just want to cut back "a little" on the Ads by not allowing specific direct linking to products. We don't want to be totallitarian about it. This is afteral..still a community of users. And we aren't looking to limit their awarness of new products. The goal here is to achieve a balance: Less threads so things don't get buried so quickly here. VS. Product availability announcements. And try to do it in as fair a way as possible. ScottA

Just a side note while we are talking about the rules: Folks, We try very hard to be fair here. VERY HARD! I wish you all could see how much my fellow team members and I discuss these things in our private forum. But ultimately. There are going to be times when someone gets away with something that other people didn't. Please try to understand. When we develope our rules. The goal is to make it "fair" for everyone. But sometimes things happen that we didn't think of. Or rules are a bit lose and someone will walk the line making it really tough for us to decide what to do about it. All I can say is. Most of us team members have been here a long, long time. I hope you know by now from our histories, that we are here to please you. NOT make you angry. But it doesn't always work. So please work with us. And forgive our occasional Blunders. We do the best we can to serve your needs. ScottA

I agree with Lovely Lady about the subscription sites. There still selling a product (a subscription). Although I think their work looks good, it seems a little unfair to Renderosity merchants. I can live with it, but it seems unbalanced to me. -Mark

OH NO, HERE COMES THE FORUM POLICE! EVERYBODY HIDE, QUICK! Sorry, ScottA, I just couldn't resist! So far this rule seems to have beem applied fairly, except I fail to see the value of moving posts from last year, that is getting a little silly. Now, if I added a link to BBay this post should be moved, right? ;-)
