Subject: Bad Hair Day

Thorne ( ) posted Sun, 16 January 2000 at 5:41 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 7:57 PM

Hey all, I've just completed a new hair model built from scratch in RayDream- Imported it to Poser3 as an .obj, then saved as a .hr2 file. I haven't tried it in Poser4 yet, but for some reason it keeps causing the dreaded C exception, access vioation error whenever I try to render it. This pic is the hair model in ati-aliased preview mode. It bombs on the shadow map build. If I turn off shadows, then it bombs on the render! It is rather large, but I don't think that's the problem, because I've rendered larger objects with no problem. The .hr2 file is just a little over 4 meg. Another thing, if I export it from Poser as .3DS, then the .3DS file will not load back, as it tells me invalid data in this .3DS. Other models I have made and done this way have never given me this particular problem either. Anybody got any suggestions? I will post this model to free stuff if I can ever figure out what's causing this error. Thorne =};-}> r-hair2.jpg

Thorne, I'm clueless about c exceptions and model building but I can tell you today I got c exceptions 4 times doing the same thing-trying to turn off 'shadows' on Allie's hair (actually the P4 conformable curls I guess)--I finally gave up and tried moving lights. It seemed to do it particularly when I tried removing the shadows on the 'body'. I got away with it once on strand 1. This has happened to me before on this hair and since I know just enough about .cr2's to make me dangerous (LOL), then might there be a connection? BTW, mine does it at rendering also. Diane B

Thorne, Great Hair! I think what you need is the patch. Did you install the beta patch? I haven't seen a c exception error (or any error for that matter) since it's installation. -Darth_Logice

Thanks for the tips! No, I haven't tried the patch, but I guess I will now. I was really hoping to be able to use it in P3, but if P4 is the only way- Maybe installing the patch will cure some of those other nagging P4 problems I've had. Thanks again! Thorne

No problem...here to help when I can :) -DL

Darth, wasn't that patch taken down and we're waiting for the new one? Diane B

Darth_Logice ( ) posted Sun, 16 January 2000 at 7:26 PM

Yeah, it was taken down..but I'm sure it's still out there somewhere...someone has the zip safely stored and ready to send I'm certain. I may even guess that thorne downloaded it and tucked it away. Me, on the other hand, I delete everything. :( DL

Thorne ( ) posted Sun, 16 January 2000 at 9:07 PM

Hey Firekath! Nope to the MN thing- I'm a southern boy born and bred and my family's been in TN since it was still NC! (1700's) THe bad hair day refers to the fact that I can't get this damn thing to render; keeps telling me I'm out of memory when I know I'm not...

Thorne ( ) posted Sun, 16 January 2000 at 9:55 PM

Thanks Allie- I did put it in UVMapper and save it back- it didn't tell me anything was out of bounds, but I haven't tried the re-saved version yet- Very possibly a bad memory leak, I've pared it down to a 2 meg .hr2 and it still tells me I'm out of memory- worse leak since the Titanic!

I don't know what's causing the "C" exception but being a packrat by nature I have a copy of the patch archived so if you need/want it Thorne, just let me know

Thanks cooler, as a matter of fact.... I just never got around to downloading it..... Thanks again! =};-}>

Thorne: I hope you haven't installed the old patch yet. There's a new patch out but it won't install over the old patch for some reason. AR
