Subject: New Texture Pack For Erick VanDycke's Gothic armor

I'm working on a new tex pack for Erick VanDyck's Gothic armor, and I'd thought I'd post a little sneak peek of one of the textures and get a little feedback. I have to say that Erick made some of the BEST texture templates I've had the pleasure to work with. They are very clear and easy to work with, and have very little distortion, if any. This is the Vicki version, but the textures will work for Mike as well. I was going for a copper look here. I think the breastplate needs something in the center. Any ideas?

I was just thinking last night that while Traveller's armor looks great, it needs a little bit of detail like this. I would definitely pick up something like this if its at a good price. My only criticism is the color. I would prefer a "steel" look. A dark texture or rusty texture are always good, too. As for the breastplate (what you really wanted to know), I like it as it is. Just my Two Cents :) Jay

Well, I like this color. Dee's Den has a texture pack out at Daz, that gives you three choices in the "steel" look category, jaybutton..you might want to hop over there and take a look, the texture fits both the Micheal and Vicky versions and is very, very nice. Elor, I like this, because it's different from Dee's and once you get those done and I acquire those, then I'll have quite a few choices for that wonderful armor set. The design is quite nice, but the actual texture gives it more of a "leather" look then a copper metal(to me anyway)..that is the only thing that I can say close to feedback about it. But then if you are going for leather, then it's perfect LOL!!! Can't wait to see the next wip :) Pendy

I agree with penarian...it looks like leather to me. The colors are good, but they have too much texture (like bump texture) to them and don't look metallic.

I think this looks great! Try turning down the bump map a bit to get a more metallic look. I like the breast plate as it is. Show us more!

Hey Everyone, Thank you for the input. I really appreciate your ideas. I took the "bumpiness" out of the center, and I had to change the reflection map. Do you like this one better?

jaybutton ( ) posted Fri, 15 March 2002 at 1:39 PM

Thanks for the tip, Pendy. I bought the Chainmail Paks from Dee's Den and her Gothic Armor MAT Pak looks good, but I prefer the detail work on Elor's to Dee's. Dee's was a little too busy for me. Elor's seems more elegant. By the way, Elor, I forgot to say in my first post, I think your texture looks great! :) Jay

nikitacreed ( ) posted Fri, 15 March 2002 at 1:41 PM

I think that is looking really good Elor! I forgot to mention that even though it didn't look very metallic to me...I really like the original with the bumpiness too! LOL! So make sure you include that in the package. ;o) Cool stuff!

jaybutton ( ) posted Fri, 15 March 2002 at 1:47 PM

Hey Elor! I think we cross posted on top of each other. I think the changes you made are a definite improvement (not that the other was bad). Still, I'd love to see it in a "steel" color. :) Jay

pendarian ( ) posted Fri, 15 March 2002 at 1:50 PM

I agree with nikita, I like both :)Jay, what I like about Dee's is that with the 'filigree' map, you can apply it to whichever part of the armor that you want and the plain steel looks really good with just touches of the filigree. Pendy

Pendy's right. Better to have more options than less IMO. This looks very nice!

Hey thanks again everyone for your input. The way I have it worked is each piece of armor has their own bumpmap, and I use a common texture and reflection map for each piece to get the color. I'd like to include both a "bumpy" and "smooth" version, but one set of armor is 15 bumpmaps. I have them set at 1200X900, so they're about 300+KB each. As long as the file doesn't get too big, I'll include both. Here is a bumpy version of the steel you wanted Jay.

Looks great! Can't wait to pick it up! :) Jay

I'm curioue, if you only have one texture, will it be bumpy or the gleaming metal look. {:o)

ElorOnceDark ( ) posted Sat, 16 March 2002 at 12:47 PM

The texture doesn't really effect the "bumpiness", it just adds a little to the coloring. I'm working on a comprimise between the bumpy and smooth.

jaybutton ( ) posted Sat, 16 March 2002 at 5:33 PM

It would be great if you could include a smooth and bumpy bump MAT. I prefer the smooth look. :) Jay

Jay, see how you like this version. I wanted some perbutations in the armor surface, to break up the reflection map. The smooth map doesn't look too bad on the breastplate, but I didn't like the way it looked on any of the greaves. Personally, I like this one, but I know everyone has their own tastes.

Here's the steel...

It looks good! I am a little concerned of what looks like stretching on the shoulder peice and chest, but overall it looks great. I am still a fan of the smooth look, but I would buy this. :)

Keep up the good work!

Jay

Okay, I think I've got enough here to please everyone. I've got three different bump map sets, with two reflection maps. Here is a sample of the copper...

...and here is a sample of the silver

Philywebrider ( ) posted Tue, 19 March 2002 at 3:44 AM

WOW! Great job! Decisions, decisions, I like the the Crinkley, and the smooth. I'd buy the armor just to get your textures. :o) Beautiful work. Phily

All right! Looks great! When can we get it? :) Jay
