Subject: Importing plants in Poser

Onyria ( ) posted Fri, 15 March 2002 at 4:49 PM · edited Sat, 08 February 2025 at 1:00 PM

I have downloaded some flowers at www.toucan.co.jp
They work fine in Vue but when I try to import them in
Poser I get strange black triangles on the surface.

Does someone know how to avoid this?

Thanks for your help

Monique

Hi Monique, They look fine in Vue most likely because Vue shows them as "double sided". Poser has a problem with that. Do the black areas still show when you render in Poser? Poser will generally render single sided polygons OK, but not show them right, in the document window. The only way to tell for sure what the problem is though, would be to look at them in a good modeller.

I've often heard that UVMapper will fix a lot of problems with models that have trouble displaying correctly in Poser. So you may want to load it up into UVMapper (Classic is still free) and then just resave it (to a new name). Then see if the new model is fixed. I'm no expert, but it sounds like some of the normals may be flipped and I think UVMapper may fix that up for you. jon

Hi
Thank you both for your answer but it seems
UV maper doesn't help.

The black areas show when rendered with Poser
see thread in Poser forum:

Too bad if there is an incompatibility with Poser ,these flowers are reall great

Do you have a modeling package? Or some conversion software? I'm thinking if you loaded them into a modeler/converter and then exported them to .obj format it might help? I went to the site to try and download one to test with but it's all in Japanese and I could not find a model to download. If you gave me a direct link to the exact download page for a specific model, I could give it a shot. jon

Hi Jon

Unfortunately I don't have any modelling software.

Here's the link to the download page of the models :
http://www.toucan.co.jp/product/3ds/garden/modelsE.html

Thanks again
Monique

So sorry Monique, but I downloaded the first one on the page, the Clematis, and was unable to open it in either of my modelers. However, 3DExploration loaded it, and I exported it as a .obj from there, but unfortunately neither of my modelers would open the .obj either. :( Why not go down to the Modeling Forum (the link) and ask the gurus that hang out there? They may at least be able to tell you what is going wrong with it in Poser and might even be able to suggest a fix. Now I'd like to know too! Good luck. You are right, they are beautiful and worth a little effort to try and get fixed up. I'll post that model link into a bug report for my modeling software too. Seems like it should have been able to open it. jon

I tried a few random ones, including the Clemantis, and I didn't have any problem at all geting them into Poser, as .3ds files. Which ones, specifically are you having trouble with, Monique?

I think they loaded okay into Poser Mike, but when rendered in Poser they had display artifacts. At least that's the way I understood the question. Whereas in Vue no display artifacts are present, they render properly. jon

Yes Mike ,Jon is right the plants import perfectly in Poser The problem occurs when you render : you get black triangles on the surface. I've nearly tried them all and I have found 3 that render perfectly : the gerbera ,forget-me-not and the lily. Why? Monique

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 16 March 2002 at 6:03 PM

Why? Poser's inability to deal with things, basically. Poser has alot of shortcomings when it concerns imports and exports. Unlike Vue, and most other 3D rendering programs, Poser was made more for dealing with it's own meshes, and not imports. Poser has a problem with meshes, and how it displays and renders them. Short of remodeling (or fixing problem areas) and remapping the objects to accomodate Poser, there's really nothing you can do about it.
