Subject: Site woes

judith ( ) posted Sun, 17 March 2002 at 1:39 PM · edited Fri, 14 February 2025 at 1:41 PM

The site has been woefully slow lately.... it takes forever to get through the forums. Usually I don't speak up, but I've been hearing it all over, so it's not just me. :)) I also belong to a Poser list that's members have voiced some concerns in respect to these last two episodes of the site not being avaiable, with whispers of hackers being involved. Do you store credit card numbers on the site? And should everyone be changing their password? It may be in your interest to send a general e-mail to the members. Thanks for everyone's hard work..... I know it can't be easy to keep a site this large maintained and it's not intended to be a slam against anyone.... just a few general concerns. ~judith~

I think they're making some server adjustments. I would assume that the servers need to be tweaked all the time, but I really don't know. I would venture to guess that the site is probably always under hacker attack, but I believe it is very secure. The thing the other day was a search for email addresses, but I believe it failed. The guy who did it was IP banned. Of course, for other reasons, it never hurts to change your password, either here, or anywhere.

Thanks Mike. I change mine monthly.... I think the credit card question was a bigger issue. If I remember correctly the CC's are not stored on the site though, the number that is "remembered" by the browser is a feature of the browser correct, not from a cookie placed by Renderosity?

Yes, Judith, that's correct. From the marketplace page that you see before giving information: Your real name, address, and credit card number you provide here are never saved anywhere in our system. We pass the encrypted versions straight through to our credit card verification server. However, this means you will have to retype them in for each purchase you make here. Please be aware, if you are typing in any fields on this form, and a box drops down with previous answers, that is your browser software, locally saving that information. That is not being activated or controlled by this site in any way. If you are concerned about this behavior, please refer to your browser's documentation.

Does this slowness have anything to do with the "blank page detected, contact the server administration" message I've been getting the last two days? I've been crashing and rebooting far too often! It is painful to negotiate the site right now, so I hope that the server responds to the usual threats of screwdriver, battery acid, and the neighbor's dog... and behaves better. Carolly

To turn off auto complete (this is in explorer. I don't know anything about Netscape)that is what saves your name CC # etc.. on your computer. In IE Explorer. Tools/Internet Options. Content tab. Auto complete button. Uncheck Forms. To clear what is already stored in your computer. Hit the clear forms button.

I Emailed admin about the "blank page detected..." situation last night after getting the message for several hours 2 nights running - Today I rec'd this response from audre; ************************* hello, thanks for the heads up. our tech guys are working on switching some of the back end around.. it may take a few 'oopses' before they get it right. hang in there! if you experience this problem in the future, please let us know. thanks ************************ (Me again - ) Looks like it's just some growing pains - Hopefully not much longer before it's resolved. They're working on it.

I got my username and password emailed to me 6 times. I emailed renderosity and got a response about a script attack. I was told that there was a script attack for passwords. I was also told to change my password. I'm sorry I deleted the email or else I would have pasted the body of it in this post. It makes me a little nervous.

Bear, that was actually not about passwords as much as someone searching for e-mail addresses. They thought they could get to addresses through the "forgot my password" feature, but they were wrong. Here's a link to Tim's report on it.

I'm worrying more about subliminal banners of the MarketPlace...About credit-cards, I am pretty sure you are in Security on Renderosity. I think you can really trust them and the ones who makebusiness with them.It would have happen something bad in my three years here as a guest-artist if not...but you're rigth, it's always better to "stay awake".
