Would you give your opinion on which of these textures looks better. Suggestions appreciated as well! Thanks! TMG

This is a little darker with a pinch more contrast. (I gotta calibrate my monitor!) :P

JDexter ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 3:25 PM

I think the top 2 look great they way they are and can be used for different purposes in each case. Of the bottom 2, they look great too and also could be used in a different circumstance from the top ones. The only thing is, I am not seeing a difference between the 2 bottom ones. Is my monitor not picking it up or am I blind? What kind of character did you have in mind for these to go on? JDexter

JDexter ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 3:26 PM

Still looks good, but still I can't see the bottom difference in the second pic.

Sue88 ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 4:01 PM

All of them are nice. I guess it would depend on what kind of character they would be for. The 2 bottom ones seem very similar to me, too, though I can see a tiny bit of difference in them here and there if I look carefully.

Lower Left looks most believable IMO

TMGraphics ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 7:25 PM

Thanks for the input! Of the bottom ones, which are basically the same, the one on the left has a slight 'plastic wrap' filter applied to it and the right one is plain. These are the start of a new Zygote Dragon texture map I am working on. Also, when you see a Dragon picture in your mind what color is it?

JDexter ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 7:59 PM

If this is for a dragon, lower left second picture, definitly.

Sue88 ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 8:21 PM

When I think of a dragon, it's usually green or brownish-green. :)

Strangechilde ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 8:33 PM

Lower left gets my vote. Believable colouring, and the shading is lovely. That is some very nice work!

Crescent ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 9:30 PM

Ummm ... all of the above? If I truly had to pick, I'd go with the browner shades, but I really like them all.

queri ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 10:08 PM

I'd pick the top left and the lower right for a Dragon. I like unusual colors and the brown shades in with the pastel blues is enough to make it dragonish. I also like dark jewel tone dragons-- Ruby red and Emerald Green, Topaz Gold. The colors are beautifully painted, very watercolor.

Top left looks the most alive to me.

JDexter ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 11:06 PM

See, you had to ask! Now you have to make 4 dragons! ;) JDexter

TMGraphics ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 11:49 PM

LOL - Thanks Guys and Gals! I'm partial to the lower left one too. Maybe I will make 3 textures; a Crimson Dragon (upper left), an Ice Dragon (upper right), and an All Purpose Dragon (lower left)! Thanks so much for the comments they are really appreciated!! TMG

"When you see a dragon picture, what colour is it" I am a great fan of Pern dragons, so they are gold, bronze, brown blue and green. I like all these.

TMGraphics ( ) posted Sun, 24 March 2002 at 10:55 AM

chohole: do you have any links to images of Pern dragon for reference? Would like to have a look-see. I will be working on 3 textures, an Earth(tanish-green), Air(ice-blue) and a Fire(crimson-red). I will post WIP's for comments as well. Thanks to all of you for you comments! TMG

Valandar ( ) posted Sun, 24 March 2002 at 11:55 AM

Either of the lower two, dude. They look a lot more "Natural". And watch out! Anne MaccAffrey sues fanart and fanfic writers at the drop of a hat, it is not a wise move for yourself or for Renderosity to even begin to try to mimic the Pernese dragons... she's even sued an artist who did a dragon that looked almost nothing like a Pern dragon... except the fact that it included multifaceted eyes, which she claims as her trademark for dragons...

Remember, kids! Napalm is Nature's Toothpaste!

TMGraphics ( ) posted Sun, 24 March 2002 at 1:09 PM

Anne MaccAffrey has every right to defend her trademark! I may check into her work if only to avoid any trademark similarities. I am aspiring to create an original texture, I tend to shy away from mimicing other peoples work. Thanks for the info on A.M.'s Pernese Dragons! I am compiling a profile for my dragon texture to reflect living and eating habits, environment, weather and age of dragon. For the wings, I wanted a fleshy, veiny look, which I think I came close! Will post future WIP for comments and critiques~ Thanks Again! TMG

Lyrra ( ) posted Mon, 25 March 2002 at 12:26 PM

I vote for the top left one :) The dragon atatched to those wings could be any one of a number of shades - or several. I can see a trout like mottling of darker shades of the two dominant tones. The other color sets have potential - but I just don't like brown for some reason. :) Those bump maps for the veins? Lyrra

JetM ( ) posted Mon, 25 March 2002 at 10:00 PM

Kinda depends on the dragon you're going for. If he or she is purplish/mauve, then either of the top two are good. The bottom two would look great with gold, brown, green, red or even darker, less saturated blues. Good work, though. Love the veins

TMGraphics ( ) posted Tue, 26 March 2002 at 8:51 PM

Lyrra ~ The veins are hand painted in 3 layers. Base, color, highlight then all overlayed in with the others. The bump map was created using the finished texture so it helps to accentuate the veins a little more. The lower left text had a little 'plastic wrap' filter applied to it, the lower right is same without the filter.
