Some .3ds's are not completely compatible it seems, I too have ran across this problem occasionally with downloaded models. It's not you. You'll just have to try and piece it tgether.

dont hold your breath. this will take a while. there are those who have studied the 3ds format for long periods of time without finishing it. in the mean time the graphics file format page is one resource for 3ds and other graphics file formats if you're interested in the coding aspects. http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/mxr/gfx/ (copied off my favorites page so the link should be good.)

Occasionally when i import some 3Ds models the various objects that make up the model are all out of alignment is this a problem with bryce 4 or something that i am doing wrong.
