Subject: Tripod just dropped me again.

I just received this email from Tripod:-

To: anthony.appleyard@umist.ac.uk Subject: [ Lycos ] Your Account Date sent: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 15:06:18 +0100 (CET) From: mmp@wsupt01.lyceu.net (mmp) Dear buckrogers3, You have failed to fulfil the Terms and Conditions of Lycos Tripod and therefore your website and your account were deleted. although I made everything which is on my site. As this letter was written on Good Friday, which is a holiday, I suspoect that some computer did it and not a human. Is this a typical occurrence?

Lemurtek ( ) posted Fri, 29 March 2002 at 9:36 AM

Sorry to hear that, but, sadly, that is typical, and most likely it's just an excuse because your using too much bandwidth to suit them. Free website, just as long as you don't actually use it. I had intended to put Lionheart's armor up for beta testing, but Fortunecity has dropped support for zips entirely, and deleted all my uploads, Yahoo briefcase has disabled public file sharing, and on and on. Looks like it's all going to be pay (and pay through the nose if you actually have a popular site) Regards- Lemurtek

Yep, I see this all the time. It's really bad, some hosters prohibit zip files even on sites you pay for. They usually don't execute this rule very often, only if you hit over 5GB from a 15GB allowance. :P

I had the same deasease with Homestead and Geocities. Now I am on a french provider, a bit slow but a solid one with 100 Mb fre disk space and bandwidth - it cost me absolutely nothing. They are the second in France and for last 3 years never deceived me. It's called free (www.free.fr). Foreigners can't log in as you need local telephone number to do so but you could look for there international (i.e UK) partners for a new provider. Yarp

Might wanna try: http://www.netfirms.com/ They're free, and they support CGI! FTP upload. I've had a Yabb-style forum on there fer a month or so. Ad banner at top. No popups. (I can't stand popups)

sirkrite ( ) posted Fri, 29 March 2002 at 3:50 PM

Netfirm, doesn't allow zip,sit or exe files to be store on there system. Found that out after I signed up for the free site.

dollpartz ( ) posted Fri, 29 March 2002 at 10:51 PM

Oh ok, sorry, I didn't noe that ... how about: http://www.hypermart.net/ ? I've had zips on there plenty of times .. ya that would b better. In this case u can avoid popups by addin a line of code they provide (as long as u dont run CGI stuff, I found tryin ta remove the popup in CGI tuff)

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Sat, 30 March 2002 at 12:56 AM

What dpes CGI mean here? DOes it mean "computer generated imaging", or what? I have occasionallty found web pages whose names end in ".cgi".

MadYuri ( ) posted Sat, 30 March 2002 at 2:06 AM

Attached Link: http://cgi.resourceindex.com/

On the web CGI usally means "Common Gateway Interface". Those are all the perl, c, c++,... scripts which allow dynamic representation of content.

Dollpartz mentioned the site at this link. The trouble is, it sayd that it is a paid site in USA, and I am in **England** (UK), and sending money out of the country is a time-wasting nuisance. I have never had a credit card. Credit cards are a security risk. Please where is a good paid site in Britain? (I know about Demon, but I already have a site there, and it is full.)

I just found a page in Hypermart that says that they provide free hosting. But I (e.g. see this link) can only find paid hosting. And again, they are in USA and I am in England. I need a paid site in Britain with a postal address so I can pay them by cheque/check.
