Hey guys, does anyone know how to do vector art ? I am interested in trying it out and would like to know where to get started :)

Photoshop 6 does have some vector based tools like the type tool, and the pen tool. However people who are doing vector based art usually use programs like Adobe Illustrator, or Macromedia's Freehand. I believe you can download demos of these at their respective sites.

I have Illustrator, but I don't know where to start to make the actual vector graphic.

Anything you create in Illustrator is vector based, unless you intentionaly convert it to raster. I would suggest running through the program's tutorials if you are unfamiliar with the tools.

you start by opening it up, and playing around with it. No one can TELL you how to make art man. you just gotta do it.

I know no one can tell you how to make art persay, that's common sense. I want to know what tools to use in other words. Got it ?

You could also give Macromedia Flash a try. Animation is neat but you don't have to animate to use it. They all have trials. There are so many 2d and 3d vector programs out there. For Photoshop the, Type Tool, Pen/Freehand Pen Tool, plus the Tools under the Rectangle Tool ( Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, Line and Custom Shape) are all vector ... probably more. For Illustrator, I believe all is vector unless you Place to Import a raster image or if you turn it into raster image. The main thing that confuses people is dealing with color in the toolbar on left: Photoshop has Foreground/Background color Illustrator has Fill/Stroke color (of course the bezier tool can render a sane person insane)

Good evening LadyJaiven, the site that Dave has posted is a very good resource for Digital Illustrators.
I had to smile as I read you post because regardless of the medium we use to create, we are still faced with that BLANK WHITE PAGE, whether it is a pencil, paint brush, or mouse (not the furry type) in your hand! I use illustrator all the time to make vector art even though I know my way around PhotoShop more.

Not knowing what you are looking to create artwise, I would recommend (if you have access to one...) that you scan a rough idea of your graphic and place it on a layer in illustrator. Lock it (this will keep you from inadvertingly modifying it) and create another layer to build from. I almost always use the PEN TOOL and "point-and-click" on key points to build my shape, adding layers as needed. Like in PhotoShop, you can turn on-and-off the visability of the layers to see the underlaying template (rough scan). Take a look at some of the tutorials available at the site Dave mentioned and good luck!

Wonders if there is a cure for the BLANK WHITE PAGE. I have to come up with a splash screen for a chat client and that darn BLANK WHITE PAGE page just sits there chuckling away at me while the clock ticks away. I've avoided it long enough. I've even cleaned and organized my whole computer room.

Dreamer, have you ever "misplaced" your favorite pencil, you know the one that gives the right shade of gray, not too hard, not too soft. You JUST GOT TO HAVE IT or you can't start that drawing. Only you find it way-to-soon!!! And that cursed BLANK WHITE PAGE stares back at you, taunting in it's "purity"!! HA-HA!! There is no cure but to make your mark and go from there (thank God for "Ctrl-Z")

Good luck on the splash page
