Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 21 4:30 pm)
Ah- first thing you have to do is buy a Macintosh, that is what the message is for! As for the message, as wyrwulf said, the memory message is sort of Poser's default- however, I did get it for real today, I had 3D Studio and PhotoShop open at the same time, I guess I can't do that with a big model (I was working on hair). I only have 256 Mbs!
Hey, Veth!! Great to see you back! I was reminded of you a week back when I saw your Veth Supermodel used in a Renderotica Gallery pic. Easy solution to Memory Allocation probs in Poser - allocate ALL memory to Poser. Let's say you're busy posing and someone comes up and says, 'Hey, aren't you supposed to be working?' You say - 'Huh? Do I have a job??' Or if it's, 'Weren't you supposed to fetch the kids from school?' You say 'Kids? What kids? I got kids?' Easy! No, seriously, like the guys say, Windows does the memory allocation for you, you can't influence it - apart from stuff like Photoshop. It has an allocation system built in, even in the PC version. Set allocation parameters from 'preferences'. If you have Photoshop already running with big stuff in it when you start up a new app, you may get probs. Do it the other way round, first start Poser, then Photoshop. Then Photoshop can't hog RAM quite as much as it would otherwise. It gets forced into swapping earlier. Slows you down but runs. But the best solution is always - a helluva lot of RAM. :]FishNose
If you have more than one hardrives, you can make a larger paging file for virtual memory. I gave my PC a 400 megs paging file and I have never seen the out of memory problem again. I only have 64 megs of ram, before I could not render multiple figures, now I can have as many as I can fit in the window.
I monitor this foroum for these kind of messages. Altho I run a Power Mac @ 256 MB RAM, I still read both Mac and PC problem messages. I've learned a lot. I will say that Poser seems to run more easily and error-free on the Mac OS. I can assign more memeory to Poser in 10 seconds, and usually run it at a full 100 MB. Used to seem faster. Now that I am used to it, it seems slower. Ha! If you're serious about Poser, and on a PC, try it out on a Mac and see if the switch would be worth it. Don

Can anyone tell me how to allocate more memory to Poser? I keep getting a memory error. I am running a Gateway Performance 700 with 128 megs of ram and a 27 gig hardrive. My Graphics card is 32megs, so it's not my system. Thanks. =)
