Subject: Really Really New to Poser

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the general direction of some poser tutorials. I just got it, actually a few hours ago, and I would like to learn how to use it a bit...obviously, hence why I have it right? Just surfing the web I have learned alot, but I am still unclear about a few things...ok so maybe it's more like a few hundred things...but who's really counting? Any help is greatly appreciated. What specifically are you unclear about? Name one or two to start. Cause when I started -- under a month ago-- almost everything was unclear. Shadowcat's tutorials helped me the most as they were truly for the beginner-- but her pages are a bit iffy right now. I tried to get in to give you an url but no dice. She's a member here, possible her page will give a better entry.

And just in case you hadn't noticed, yet; There's over a hundred Poser tutorials accessible via the tutorial link atop this page. You can also try clicking thru to the top 15 web ring links at the bottom of the margin, many of them have tutorials, free downloads, & links to more sites with the same - There's a terrific virtual feast awaiting you - Dig In!

Sadly I have appearantly been staring at my computer for to many straight hours, I looked for a tutorials link earlier and didn't actually SEE it until you mentioned it. Certainly seems like a bad start doesn't it? As to what I am unclear about...basically everything. Though I have to say that in poking around in the program and the file folders I understand a little bit more. I am just kind of unclear on how to make props, and how people actually get things so large when I cant see the menu's if I do that...if that makes any sense at all I am doing better than I thought. I am about to delve into the tutorials so if anyone has any other advice chances are fairly good I will be around. Thanks again everyone!!

I know next to nothing about modeling-- actually I know exactly nothing. But if your window is so large you can't get at the dials and stuff, you can resize it under the Window menu-- it's the last on the list. This happens to me every time I load a preset scene. You can render to a different window at a much higher size-- I rendered to 1500 by something or other pixels last night. That's valuable for a final render. And it also helps to render a bit larger if your checking teensy stuff, like do the toes come through the shoes? Look under Render options.

Cimerone Which version of Poser do you have? If you got the free Poser 3 off that magazine CD (3D World #22) you might like to visit the Curious Labs website & download the P3 Adv Manual in PDF format. Downloadable updates available there for Poser 3 & Poser 4, also (see link above). - Some good galleries, links, and a lot of information there, too.

I have version 4. And I am sort of getting the hang of the basics, only been what like 7 hrs now? lol

Poser 4? Excellent! I'd really recomend installing the free 4.03 update from the CL site - It add some additional features & compatibilities. Some of the Poser 4 Commercial Products and Free downloads from here & other sites take advantage of some of the features only in the update. (transparencies, I believe, is one). Have Fun!

I swear I am not trying to be a pain here, but how in the name of all that is holy do you dress the char? Possibly add tribal tattos and such...I think maybe I am overtired...lol Thanks for all your help thus far and hopefully I won't bug you too much more...:)

Regina - Okay, Quickie Tutorial Dressing Character; 1 - Load Figure, & pose 2 - Select a garment made for that figure (don't put male clothes on female, etc - the setup of each is different). 3 - click on DOUBLE CHECK-MARKS (Not single check) which ADDS it to the scene (single-check REPLACES/double check ADDS) 4 - the garment appears - spreadeagled in default position 5 - to place onto character, go to top menu Figure->Conform To... and click. 6 - select figure 1 from the popup, & behold! the garment has magically placed itself upon the character. Feel free to pose as desired (for the most part). Adding Tattoos: Tattoo's have to be added to the texture-map of the figure in a painting program (some textures in freestuff and for sale in the market have tatoo's already) and then applied to the character via the top menu Render->Materials->Texture Map->Load This is very brief, as I'm on a deadline. There's a lot of tutorials available on TEXTURE & TEXTURE MAPPING - those are the terms to watch for. Like clothes, texture maps have to be used on the character they're made for. Sorry I can't go into more detail - you'll find quite a bit of basic material in the manual, also (it's not the best of manuals, but does touch on most of it - PDF copy avail at the link I posted earlier, if your is misplaced (like mine). Thanks so very much...BIG HUGE help, you are wonderful. I am still a little fuzzy on texture mapping and the like..I get that you are supposed to open it in a paint program i just have NO idea where they are to open them..any ideas? Thanks again...maybe in an alternate universe (meaning highly doubtful) I will be able to help you with something. lol

i think you're off to a great start. You have all the jargon down right away. When I first got Poser, I didn't even know there were texture maps in ther, let alone what they were called, or what to call anything else in there, for that matter. You're learning quick! I already love it and I am almost done with my first creation ever. It helped that I d/l some things and had to learn where they went before i could use them. Then you sort of learn what does what and why. Sorta...I also figured out to tattoo your figure you just draw on the body..in the tex map. Its been so much fun I cant wait til its finished. Thanks so much for EVERYONE's help. Its so appreciated you cant even imagine.

Hi Cimerone, I went through your gallery and was impressed. You learned a lot really fast. Everything is looking good, though perhaps some of the images lacked shadow? This could be your style though, not sure. Time will tell. Since you're new to Poser and the community why not tell us a bit about yourself and your artistic background? -WTB
