I ran this pretty decent discussion on sky dome based lighting. It covers every aspect of the issue and is applicable to all 3d apps. I have found that this approach is used quite often in 3d apps with radiosity, but to me, that is overkill, since the renders with and w/o radiosity wont be too dissimilar using this method. (Actually a good global illumination/radiosity system should produce the same results w/o the sky dome.... at least in theory.) Anyway, this is a good way to introduce nice area lighting and shadow effects in a scene. Check out the latest version of anything glows for a Carrara specific implementaion.
