Subject: Rename "Member Gallery" to "Member Photo Gallery"?

Allen9 ( ) posted Thu, 21 March 2002 at 12:02 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 12:47 AM

It seems some folks are confused by the "Member Gallery" and are posting their CG art in there. It makes it a bit difficult when going to see "mugshots" of other members, and if someone posts a "Bryce" picture there, for instance, it won't be seen be those who go to the "Bryce" Gallery to look for pics. If those folks realized what the gallery is for, and posted their images to the appropriate galleries, they'd get far more hits on their pics. I think that a simple rename of the gallery to the "Member Photo" gallery would help clear up the confusion. It should be a relatively minimal effort to do that. Just a suggestion for possible improvement.

MikeJ ( ) posted Thu, 21 March 2002 at 12:08 PM

I'd second that one, Allen. I can't even think how many times this has come up, but it's been alot.

Sipapu ( ) posted Thu, 21 March 2002 at 12:23 PM

Good concept. How about being even more obvious, with something like Member Mugshots Gallery? Or maybe Member Photo Album and not even call it a gallery? I think that's probably where the real hangup is.

Allen9 ( ) posted Thu, 21 March 2002 at 3:32 PM

Good idea Sipapu. 'Member Photo Album' would sure be waaay less ambiguous. Mods/admins: Whattaya think?

Varian ( ) posted Thu, 21 March 2002 at 4:12 PM

Yeah, I think "Member Photo Album" would be a good one. The change might help clear up the confusion. :)

Slynky ( ) posted Fri, 22 March 2002 at 9:17 PM

There is no REAL confusion. New members see something called Member's Gallery, and they assume that's where they post their work maybe. the fact that there are two different gallery links on the front page is what is screwy. The memebrs gallery is a SELF PORTRAIT gallery, not a self photo gallery. If someone wants to post a self portrait of themselves done in LW, then that's a good place to put it. Personally, I feel that the member's gallery link should be deleted, and there should be a Self Portrait gallery in the Art galleries, seeing as that's what the member's gallery is actually for. now, we only need to request this 500 more times before someone actually puts a small thought into it all. Maybe i should try seeing how many times I can hit the POST REPLY button before my screen refreshes again, that go me the attention of the ever attentive Spike within two minutes in the OT forum...

Sipapu ( ) posted Fri, 22 March 2002 at 9:28 PM

Well, it doesn't actually say it's supposed to be self-portraits rather than photos. It says, "This Gallery provides members a place to post pictures of themselves." So I guess it's open to interpretation. Personally, I really don't care one way or the other. I was just offering suggestions that would make it a bit clearer that it's not a place to post our art.

bonbon ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 3:36 AM

I third the idea of changing the name to member's photo album or something along those lines.that way people will actually post photos of themselves. :)

Slynky ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 6:02 AM

if you just get rid of it altogether, new members won't have the chance of being confused at all.

Sipapu ( ) posted Sat, 23 March 2002 at 8:13 AM

Maybe instead of such a confusing gallery, folks could post their photos or self-portraits on their artist pages if they want. There's already a mechanism in place for that. Just tossing ideas around....

i like stopping by the member's gallery every once in a while, so i don't favor the idea of eliminating it all together, but i would like to see it renamed. i don't care whether it be listed with the art galleries or in the side bar, but definitely rename it. -scott

well then why, when it's so evident that the community really wants or doesn't want something, doesn't staff at least respond with a 'no we can't do that' message (if they can't). why do i see so many forum posts with dates starting quite a while back and everyone posting how much they'd like to have this or that changed and no evidence that staff cares at all what is being said or requested?

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 11 April 2002 at 6:54 PM

Mainly because we're having our own discussion along the lines of ... "Hey, did you see this post?" "Yeah, that looks like a good idea" "What's the best way to do that to make everyone happy?" "Like this" "Nah, like that." etc... Personally, I like the idea or a "Member Photo Gallery", as well as changing the header line to read "A place for members to post a photograph of themselves. Anyway, we are working on it, as I type! Thanks. ;]

Ironbear ( ) posted Thu, 11 April 2002 at 7:10 PM

Pretty much what he said. I realise it would help if someone on the "monkeywrench" end posted more often a quick "good idea, we'll look at it".

Well, in the meantime, you can always do what I do and svae the html as a .txt file, edit it to your liking and then save it as .html. When you get frustrated, just look at your *own* version of it. Good, short term solution, while you wait. You should see what my version of the OT Forum looks like. ;)

Cool. Now what's with changing Artist Page to Home Page? I liked it the way it was. Wahhhh. ;-)

Micheleh ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 9:35 PM

They what... oh! 'Waah' me too! "Artist Page" made me feel special! Home page is so dull! Change it back! 8*(

Ironbear ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 9:39 PM

Sorry. They're tied together. You change one, the other reverts back to "Homepage and vice versa. Gotta pick one. ;]p~~~~
