His city blocks for lightwave are probly the coolest things I've downloaded. I was messing around with seeing if I could get a few to look good in poser. What do you think? I wish there where textureing options in poser though.

FishNose ( ) posted Sun, 14 April 2002 at 4:08 AM

Way cool! Where did you find those?? :] FishNose

Great Bizarro ( ) posted Sun, 14 April 2002 at 4:22 AM

You could run them through UVmapper and do a texture per building. Yes, where are they located, nice work.

You can download them (there are 5 blocks with textures too!) in the Lightwave forum resources. Staby

How does one get these into Poser?? They're WAY cool. :] FishNose

Yet another location and more models.

Next question is how to transfer/load these files into poser. I d/l'ed the ones from axemans site in lightwave format and get an error when attempting an import into poser. I found a translation plugin for 3d Max 3 & 4 but I get an error msg.when trying to load into max with it also. Anyone have a new version of 3D Exploration that supports it or Polytrans. Obj files are the best bet. Thanks all

FishNose ( ) posted Sun, 14 April 2002 at 1:07 PM

Hi people - I've found a solution. Amorphium Pro can read iwo files, so I can make obj files out of these. There are 20 city blocks in all from Moebius87, and if somebody can get hold of him/her and get permission or in some other way verfiy that it's OK, I can convert the whole lot to obj and put them up as freebies along with the original textures. The grouping and texturing maybe someone else can do that is better at it than I, but first we have to get permish. :] FishNose

He frequents this site. Send him a message and he will reply.

I have already. We'll see what he says. :] FishNose

Hi folks, :o) I guess that I've been hunted down like the dog that I am... LOL. Thank you very much for your interest in "Dystopia". Yes, they are 100% free, for unlimited and unrestricted use. Please do whatever you feel needs to be done with them. The city blocks are designed as low polygon, medium detail background props, where fellow artists can put their own buildings in the foreground and be free of all the modeling grunt work to concentrate on the good stuff. There are 4 blocks per zip file, with a separate zip for standard textures (which needs lots of improvement). These are in LW7 format, which is not very Poser friendly because of the default 100 degree smoothing angle and split vertices that Poser requires. I've tried to convert to obj format myself, but I'm afraid I don't know enough about Poser to get it right. I've taken it as far as I can go with my skills, and I need help. I can export to obj format and send to someone to betatest, but I'm afraid that surfacing/texturing information gets trashed. I'd be very willing to work with anyone to get this done right for the Renderosity community... I am already completing block 028 of 200 now, so it would be good to learn how to model properly for Poser at this early stage. Just let me know what needs to be done next. Cheers! - M

Did I mention that I'm also doing a series of starship interiors sets? Yes, this is a shameless plug for a collaboration I am working on. Once we've used them a bit they should be available for use. Currently my Antares Class bridge is available for free download, again in LW7 format, but Schlabber is helping me convert them for use in Bryce/Poser. You'll have to ask him when he is ready to release them. The spaceship interiors series will include a smaller bridge (similar to Nostromo), corridors, blast doors, lifts, medlab, sickbay, science labs, hangar decks, motor pool, engineering, brig, armoury, crews quarters, officers cabins, mess halls, observation decks... etc... I noticed an abundance of great fantasy and medieval stuf, not much in the scifi sector. Please let me know if this is something Poser artists would be interested in. :o) - M

I didnt have any problem exporting the blocks as obj files. It is a hassle to remap them but dont mind. I need soom spare time to really do a good job. There are so many materials. I downloaded a file from renderocity's lightwave forum area (one that your link goes to) that was a ship interior with a cool chair. Very cool. Your stuff is so good that I at least have to use it for something. There is a lot more fantasy stuff but Scifi kind of fits into it all. It all interests me. I would help convert the files however I could- some else might do a better textureing job. I could export obj files and split them with UVmapper. I Subdivide(triple) them before exporting them and then had no problem.

Moebius87 ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 3:01 AM

Thanks for the tip, lynnJonathan. I've found that 3-point polygons do work well, but they tend do to increase my polygon count by over 300% - not good... :o( Specially when curved surfaces are involved. There must be a way to keep surface names for materials to a minimum so that it is easier to work with. Any suggestions? - M

I'll see what happens if I export as lightwave 5 file with out tripleing the polys. Most Poser meshes are 4 point polys anyway. Sometimes this is the best way. Might help the material prob too.

soulhuntre ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 4:14 AM

Now I need to get these into 3DS max :) They will look SOOO sweet in finalRender :)

lynnJonathan ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 4:18 AM

Well, I figured out they dont have to be tripled. I usually get an error message if I dont or at least save them as version 5. But you still have to split the polys in UV mapper which triples them. Not sure if I ended up doing the one in the picture twice. I think so. Original lw file is around 3000 and that one is probly 15,000. Thats insane! After splitting in UV mapper you can always use the group tool and selct polys you want smooth and ckick the weld button. That's a better tip then the last. -Jon

Moebius87 ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 4:54 AM

Let me get this straight... from LW7, save as LW5 format. Open in UV Mapper (it can open lwo format? or do I need to export as obj) and then triple the polygons (convert all multi-point polygons to only 3-point polygons). Finally, re-group surfaces which need to be co-planar or smooth in UV Mapper and save. Did I get that correct? Thanks for the tip! - M

OK... Your model -> 3D explorer -> 3DS -> Max -> finalRender with global illumination, just for fun :)

soulhuntre ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 5:50 AM

And yeah, I know, it's "smudgy" in spots... but I wasn't casting that many rays :)

file_4544.jpg

Just export as an obj and split in uv mapper. It only opens obj files.

Hey soulhunte, what is 3D explorer. Is it one of those conversion programs?

Wanted to post an image of some buildings I'm working on. They are just simple cubes with cool textures from Max Payne video game.

soulhuntre ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 6:43 AM

Yeah, 3D explorer is from "Right Hemisphere" - it is a sort of preview/conversion beastie. They have a 30 day demo. I don't know if I liek it enough to buy it when that expires.

FishNose ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 3:19 PM

Ummm.... since I haven't the foggiest notion about what one can do when exporting from LW7 or 3D explorer or Max, the question is - has anyone here the possiblity of converting the Dystopia city blocks to obj with textures attached? (I can do it without textures, but that's kind of pointless...) Or should I go and look for someone who can help us out on the other forums? I need to ask you guys, so I know how we can solve this prob. :] FishNose

soulhuntre ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 5:28 PM

I am going to give that a try tonight I think... 3D explorer might be able to do it. If anyone else wants to try in case I don't get the time a 30 day free demo is at righthemisphere.com and it is fully functional.

How's this? 3D Exploration program works great. I'll see how many I can do tommorow. Shouldn't take long. But I'd like to spend time getting the textures and materials right. I need to render out the ones in lightwave and compare- everything in this image looks like its the same color. But the textures data converts over.

Wow!! That is really nice!! Okay, we'll be patient... (pant, pant...) :} FishNose

Great work, lynnJonathan! Do the bump maps on the "B##-Feature" materials work? These are supposed to be like carved architectural panels, same color and image material as the "B##-Walls", but with a cubic projection repeating seamless tile as a deep bump map. Any other tips for modeling the next blocks? Any requests? I wouldn't worry too much about using the original textures and materials. I've seen these buildings used with superior surfaces. Please check out the link to my friend's site, an artist named DarkGrafix did this render. Looks like you folks have it all sorted out, so I'll get back to modeling block 029/200. - Cheers! - M
