When I saw Bev's post and Jovan's comments (as well as Niko's illustrated addition) I went wooooo! (Yeah, I think it was wooooo, could've been ooooooowoo...) I had been working on this image (below) this afternoon before I had seen that post. Also involving shadows, trees and humanoid figures....hmmmm

This is a big eucalypt gum tree in my Mother's backyard...a while back I thought I would try something a bit different...night shot with the Ricoh on a tripod, flood light behind me holding this pose for a bit...needless to say an extended exposure...

....oh, originally in colour, desated and colourised in photoshop. :-)>

Very strange stuff going on in here today... I like this PC & I'm wondering what it would look like if the shadow was less solid & more integrated with the texture of the bark.... you sparked my imagination!

I love it, love the hands

Like this, Punky. Gotta admit I too would be interested to see it if the shadow was a little less substantial - maybe seperate pics of the tree and a shadow with the shadow superimposed at lower opacity? Don't get me wrong, I still this this is a heck of a picture and good idea! (",)

Wild imagination, PC.

hehe u look like you are being arrested.... spread em,boyo!! heehee ahem, ok seriously ... what a great shot!! very ghostly n such....

Slynky ( ) posted Thu, 18 April 2002 at 6:38 PM

well, lots of praise has been said, and I've never been good at giving it as u know PC. So instead I offer a damnation... my only gripe with this is nothing technical really, cuz I don't know how to properly word it. The shadow itself with the tree is wicked, but to my eyes it looks as if there's a hole in the tree cut out in the shape of a person rather than a shadow. I dunno, I do need glasses though, so its prolly just me.

Here's the original, with a layer duplicated, curves played with in it, and flattened again Slynky, I'm not sure if that will change the "Hole-Cut-In-Tree" phenomemon for you?? :-)>

Slynky ( ) posted Thu, 18 April 2002 at 7:11 PM

i think it might be the fact that the shadow is completely opaque that's messing my eyes, but if you lowered it, it would likely detract a lot from the image. To each his own dude. Good shyte mon.

PunkClown ( ) posted Thu, 18 April 2002 at 7:14 PM

That's the way the shadow turned out in the final exposure though, I suppose because it was an extended exposure, at night? Thanks anyway Slynks, thanks all for the feedback!

Wicked idea Punk, and damn good pic. Dunno why I haven't played with long exposures. Imagine all the stuff you can do with fast feets and flash. .n

Like everyone who commented... ...Fantastic idea and photography..!! :)

starshuffler ( ) posted Fri, 19 April 2002 at 11:03 AM

Another freaky image! ( Saw the pic and had an attack of claustrophobia. To me it looked like some poor soul trapped in the tree! I could almost hear cries for help and pounding noises... (sheesh, i need help, I know...) This is really wicked stuff! ;-) (*

Thanks peoples, Doruk, I noticed you commented in the galleries (thanks) on the placement of my head on the huge knot in the tree where a limb used to be, that was a deliberate compositional choice, thankyou for noticing it! :-)>

I noticed that too, should have said because I really like that touch ; )
