Subject: Bare esssentials?

originalplaid ( ) posted Thu, 18 April 2002 at 8:45 PM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 10:04 AM

So I am broke and unemployed and developed a very harsh poser addiction in the last two days (Someone bought it and didn't like it so they gave it to me in trade for something else on Monday... boy remind me to thank him, I am out money and have been up for over 24 hours just playing with this thing!!!) So without money, what should I buy on a budget to start making some cool 3d art and movies (More interested in the movie aspect of it!) I have Victoria (Bought that first when I realized that you couldn't do anything with her - Also Anime Hair and Millenium Kids were already bought when I got the software) and I bought the Candi skin from here since it came with some clothes and hair. What sucks now is i have limited money and need some clothes and some hair!!! What is the best/most value? What in the free sections can be outstanding with a little effort? what DAZ3d stuff should I buy? What would you buy if you had basically nothing and only had like $50 dollars for this killer expensive hobby? I lean towards the contemporary and realistic side of things. Thanks alot.

Try this and see if it works. Instead of trying to find out what you can purchase why don't you try to see what you can create. Use things from the free sections and find out what it is you like to do the most, then work with that. Hey it was just an idea.

originalplaid ( ) posted Thu, 18 April 2002 at 9:35 PM

I am trying that very thing now. The main thing that bothers me is that i have these bald naked models! Seriously though, I am making an effort... but I see all these great things in the market place that just scream "BUY ME!" When I am at work on DSL though, I am hitting up the free section pretty hard. Thanks to everyone who put things there. I am one of those people who isn't scared by endless options... new items give me new ideas. But having limited things hurts my creativty unfortuantly.

Hmmm, For hair, there are plenty of free good ones at Kozaburo's site: http://digitalbabes2.com/ For lots of clothes, check through freestuff or get a subscription to Poserworld: http://www.poserworld.com/ fantastic value And there are a lot of great items in the Rosity store (be sure to check customer reviews and Product Showcase forum) Good luck, Poser is a computer junkie's nightmare.

Go to Digital Babes-- the link is right over on the right side, under Web Ring Top 15-- the BEST hair and it's free. Not only that, you have to be a bit creative, sometimes if it doesn't have a good Vicki fit. Plus try to make different textures or different colors for it-- I did. Some of us are modelers and some of us aren't. I'm not myself. Then, look at the V2P4 option for lots of clothing thats free for posette. There are at least 5-10 and probably much more, free Vicki texs just in our free area. Check AprilYSH's store site, she gives a link to her vicki to stephanie tex, the same place has her Vicki to P4 tex. They aren't hard to figure out-- I'm stupid technwise and I could do it. There's plenty out there to make very very good renders-- oh, also check RunDNA's free area-- excellent free prop, Infinity Cove, gives good background. http://host1.bondware.com/~syydr/ The free lights in our area are primo as well. Lighting is crucial. And don't overlook the jewelry. Emily Welcome to the addiction.

Darn, netherworks, you beat me. My typing is slowing down-- as is everything else. Yeah, PWFW is the best bargain IN Town. Emily

:) queri, you're right about Runtime DNA... good products there. I've certainly blown some loot at that place.

For $50.00 a year go over to PoserWorld/Fairy Woods and grab a subscription. Plenty of clothing and props for the regular P4 figures and for Mike and Vicki. It has to be one of the best bargains I've gotten for the money. Look throught the forum here for pictures of their updates (try searching PWFW) or hear over to the free sight and look throught the previews. Don't let the popups and banners fool you, though, they are heavy on the free sight but NOT once you get into the members section.

Were I in your situation, originalplaid, I'd scrape together an additional $10 and spend it all at DAZ on the Victoria Clothing Pak 1 and the Morphing Clothing Pak add-on. That will set you up with a basic wardrobe, which is heavily supported by the Poser community with tons of textures and transmaps, for nearly endless modern style combinations.

But I suppose it really depends upon what sort of images/animations you want to create. If your theme is fantasy/medieval, for instance, the Clothing Pak isn't nearly as useful.

Some good sources of free clothing (Victoria and P4):
Serge Marck's PoserFashion
Ghastley Software

If you need any tips on animation or movie-making in general, drop by the 3D/2D Animation and Director's Cut forums.

I can only second (or third or fourth, LOL) the recommendations above or get a PoserWorld subscription. You will find an abundance of clothes, props and even entire scenes to get your imagination running wild. The historical clothes are amazing, I found stuff for an entire Roman scene in there, clothes, props and the setting. And they keep adding stuff all the time. Great value for your money.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Fri, 19 April 2002 at 2:18 AM

Actually, the better deal is Traveler's "Props Club". For $15/year he has given us something new each week... and Monday is like Christmas. We never know what we are going to get, but it will be neat. He takes requests, too. Let's see, last year has included a Grecian dress and set of urns, treasure and a chest in which to keep it, medieval clothing for everyone, mechanical wings (and 3-4 more regular wings), dog and cat accessories, and a billboard. Hey, don't laugh about the billboard, it will look great behind Duddley's 57 Chevy! And, if you are looking for something to spark your creativity, clicking on the URL to discover an apothecary's alligator or space helmets or a barbecue set ought to provide a nugget for a new image. You don't get to select items the way you do on the other sites, but for me the surprise is part of the pleasure. Carolly

And did you checked the free stuff section from this site? There are tons of different stuff around. Seravajan

And if you haven't already, get in the habit of stopping by DAZ every week for their freebie.

Kelderek ( ) posted Fri, 19 April 2002 at 7:04 AM

DAZ has just recently added an archive where past free downloads can be found. Very neat, I have missed a few in the past when I forgot to check every week!

ronknights ( ) posted Fri, 19 April 2002 at 7:48 AM

I'll happily give another recommendation for Poserworld. You can get an idea of the value of a Poserworld subsription. Go to the marketplace and look at the items created by RPD Styling (I think that's the name). If you bought 2 or 3 of those items you'd easily have paid for your subscription.

Be sure to check my site. I have some free vicky stuff that is not posted in the free stuff here. Later, Phillip

Hi, I'm going to through in one more site to make your scenes more detailed. Go to 3dplants.com Lots of great free plants and a new one from there cd collection every month. very cool!

Lyrra ( ) posted Fri, 19 April 2002 at 5:38 PM

If you must cough up money - go subscribe to poserworld - you can DL all the stuff on their old CD's, plus new stuff every week for all figures. Worth the money, IMHO. If you like contemporary stuff - go check the fresstuff at RuntimeDNA (Sydd's site) there's some neat modern stuff there. And then just go through freestuff. After you've sucked all that down, then go to the poser sitelist the moderator started and go to each site. I don't have any of my 50+ freestuff things here anymore, been too lazy to reupload them. :) So there's stuff to find stuck in weird places on the net. And of course if you need something specific, just ask here. Have fun! :) Lyrra
