lynnJonathan, Soulhuntre, FishNose... :o) Just thought I'd post a sample WIP for the next set of buildings you people will need to convert into Poser. I'm pushing them past the 600 meter height now. I also noticed that in your conversions, all my light beacons disappear... is this because these are only 2-point polygons (lines 1 pixel thick). Any suggestions on how to keep them? I'd appreciate if you could offer these up as Poser freebies once you're able to make the conversion work. Thank you very much for all your input and suggestions. Cheers! - M

Wow!! Love that block! - reminds me vaguely of Robocop, whatever the big corporation was called. Some suggestions about new blocks - (you asked for them in a previous thread) - 1. Some that break the mould - eg double blocks, or even 4 in one huge block. Then one could put a really enormous building on it, like a massive HQ or palace or some such. 2. Also open spaces, like parks with smaller buildings in them. 3. Some purely residential blocks, with rather repetitive, similar blocks of apartments, for instance, standing in rows. 4. Irregularly cut streets 5. Road /air tunnels through blocks or double blocks 6. Very tall pyramid shaped scraper like the one in San Francisco 7. Really pointy towers, like Empire State 8. Spiral shaped, even curved (?) towers 9. Space pad / space port / landing area 10. Multiple storey parking lot type buildings - for airborne vehicles 11. Some kind of irregular 'slum' area? This after all is typical of ANY city, no matter how ordered it is. 12. Harbour area 13. Warehouses/hangars 14. Bridges across between blocks, high up - possibly multiple bridges in many directions Hey, don't take me seriously - I'm just spouting ideas - maybe something at least in this list is useful as an idea?? :] FishNose

Thanks for comments. Not sure I want to do megablocks or special buildings like palaces or starports though. I think I want to leave feature buildings to individual artists. Dystopia was intended as a background prop. :o) Biggest prob with parks is the trees. I don't think I could pull it off, best to leave it to programs like Bryce, Vue, World Builder and Terragen. Don't worry about mass transit system. When I'm done with a larger number of blocks, I will start work on a modular elevated multi level train/tube system, with stations and everything. Like the idea of irregular blocks, residential blocks, slums and warehouses. I might even do rotundas and cul 'de sac (spelling?) Thanks for your input, FishNose! :o) - M

Risopan, Modeling time for a city block takes anywhere from 3 to 6 hours. Surfacing is a standard setup already. I have a dummy scene where I just throw in the objects and render. Rendering time takes about 6 to 10 minutes with raytraced shadows and reflections. This one took about 7 minutes.

Wow!!! A transit system. Too cool. The poser props will have external obj files so you could import them into other apps or remap if anyone wanted to. I think a few landing pads would be nice and I like the idea of a bay too.

Impressive Work Moebius!! Which app are you using??? LW? Looks like a LW render... I'm finishing a fully working Elevator for Poser. I use Max. But, switching to C4D soon for the Modeling. Maybe, if you have Ideas, i could do one for this Amazing CityScape... Later! Anik

There is program (see link) that will do the conversion. I don't see what good they would be in Poser, they're much to big. I take it you work in metrics, is one unit equal to one Meter?

Anik - Yes it's done in LW. Please help yourself to the Dystopia city blocks and do whatever you want. But IMHO a fully functional elevator would make more sense in a detailed interior, not in some blocky background prop. :o) Grey cat - Yes I always build to scale, and yes I do use the metric system. You are absolutely right, these are huge. Maybe I should post this in the Bryce forum instead. Aharon - lynnJonathan, soulhuntre and FishNose are helping and teaching how to make the conversion to Poser/Bryce. They are still in LW7 format at this stage and I do not know when it will be available in the converted format. If you are willing to work with LW7 format, here is the link. :o)

I don't know what application was used for this render by an artist named "DarkGrafix", but he retextured my cityblocks and produced this. :o) It took me a while to recover from this. Absolutely stunning work. I'm not really a final render sort of artist, more of a modeler and I can only bring my stuff to a certain level. Nice to see what other artists can do to decent stuff and make in really beautiful.

Outstanding Moebius87! I was disappointed that Bryce wouldn't open them, but even if I never am able to download them, let me just say I am in awe of your talent and your generosity. Those are some kick *ss models!

I'm halfway done converting them to textured poser props. They have external obj files so they should be importable to many apps. I'll need somebody else to post them. I dont know the best way. They should be done pretty soon.

Yup! Send 'em over! I can't be sure I can handle the WHOLE lot at once - my bandwidth limit is likely to go out through the window with this. If it goes over a little that's fine - this is such good stuff, I'm quite happy to put up a little extra cash to cover it, but if we go head over heels it gets REALLY expensive. But send the whole bunch to me right away - are they separable in smaller bundles, like the originals, or do they inextricably share textures? I thought maybe we could release half of them first, see how bad it gets, then let out the rest if things don't get too bad. I'll put 'em up in freestuff with direct links. We're going to need thumbs, of course - do you have anything suitable? Or maybe the original thumbs from the LW files would be OK, what do you guys think? Oh - and is there a suitable readme with them? Or does that need to be written still? Moe, I believe you put no restrictions on use of your stuff, apart from selling them. Is that correct? We can nick your text from the original readmes, but we need explanations perhaps, about texs and such. OK, talk to me guys - :] FishNose

M - I missed the point of your post there! You mean - host the next blocks, like from 21 and up? Sure thing! It's all a matter of bandwidth - I have a total of 10 gigs per month paid for in my ISP contract, and that goes a fair way. FishNose... let's see how the first freebies fare... geez I didn't think they'd generate that much interest. Perhaps I should consider going into business? Don't worry I will learn the conversion ropes, and they will still be dirt cheap. I'd like to justify all the time I spend making them. Can't say I blame you, M - I like freebies, but you've done a lot of good work with these, so I see your point. The Poser community is quite big. A lot bigger than the other S/W communities here. I'm not sure what the reaction will be, but I'm pretty sure your stuff will be popular. Depends, I suppose, on how many are into sci-fi related stuff. Quite a lot of people are also into historical and/or fantasy, Ancient Egypt and such, and Swords & Sorcerers. And then there's the pretty large pinup/glamour and, um, related stuff, crowd. Like me for instance! :o] But we'll know once we put the freebies up - how heavy the pressure is. Where are you situated,by the way? What time zone? I'm in Sweden, GMT +1. And I'd definitely be willing to help out with beta testing future stuff! :o] :] FishNose

What withmost of the Poser crowd stationed in Norht America, we've got a pretty fair spread of time zones here. Which makes for slower turnaround when communicating, of course... But isn't the web amazing - here we are, at all corners of the planet, going on like this? I think of it sometimes, it's not even 10 years since the web started to spread! :] FishNose, gettin' all phillysoffycull, like.

Just so you both know: I downloaded 1-20 blocks and ran them through 3DWin to convert them into 3ds files, imported them into Bryce and discovered (oh joy!) that they were built in groups that could be taken apart and have individual pieces isolated for different texturing. I was so afraid they would arrive as a single piece, and now (bliss! happiness! I can pretty much go hog wild with them from a texturing POV. I'm off to Toronto for the Opera America conference but will be playing with these beauties when I get home, and I'll post the results on the Bryce board if you're interested. Moe, this things are soooo cool. Lotsa thanks!

I agree ... I think as long as the price is reasonable there is a strong demandd for this... and you should be compensated. Leave the ones that are already "in the wild" free... no one can ever say you didn't contribute to the community because even just what you have released is amazing - and maybe consider charging for them from here out. BTW - I'll be happy to test too :)

Hi soulhuntre, thank you very much for your offer to help betatest. I gratefully accept. Still waiting to get a reply from lynnJonathan to complete the test crew. :o) I still have a few more blocks to complete before I am prepared to start learning how to convert and re-texture. Then I have to figure out how to write "readme's", setup shop in the marketplace, and figure out all the other behind-the-scenes stuff. Any ideas on where to start? I got a lot of homework to do. Mobieus87 these are amazing. I can't wait to see the entire project. lynnJonathan, if you don't mind me asking, are you re-texturing manually or have you an utility that helps out? I've tried re-texturing in Bryce and it's been rather laborious. I've also tried Anthony Appleyard's 'getcoltx' but I've yet to get any of these files through the getcoltx successfully. I'm also looking forward to seeing your re-worked files.

"3D Exploration" helped convert some of the textures. Bryce doesnt import anything with the textures. Other words it will always be a hassle in bryce. Poser can open obj and 3ds files that point to textures. 3D Exploration converted the models with the corect UVs and it made it easy to re-apply the maps. Oh, and the materials where correct in the conversion and the are even groups when I checked the group tool.

Thanks, lynnJonathan. 3D Exploration looks interesting. Oddly enough, one trick I've found for getting .OBJ's into Bryce is to load it into Poser and export it from there. The new .obj files will then import into Bryce with some of the textures in place - usually the Color map. It just doesn't carry the Transparency or bump maps very well. Thanks again to Moebius87 and to you for making these available to the community.

As a side note... No, two-point polys can't carry over in Poser. It doesn't acknowledge renderable splines.
