Subject: Artists by Genre??

bloodsong ( ) posted Tue, 23 April 2002 at 6:02 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 8:28 PM

heyas; well, i was bored, so i actually looked at the side menu there, and saw this. and poked around in it. and i was wondering, who went around putting artists into categories? then i wondered if i was under fantasy (no) or nature (no). and THEN i wondered, well maybe it's a new option under your member profile. so i checked, and no, nothing there about what genre(s) you are. so now i'm REALLY wondering who has so much time on their hands that they can sit and categorize everybody in the galleries, here??? that's just too weird. (and where did they stick me??!)

hello, it's not something in your profile, but something that you select when you set up your artist/homepage.

Sipapu ( ) posted Tue, 23 April 2002 at 7:16 PM

Heh heh. Well, I picked my own genre before all those folks with so much time on their hands could put me in their own slot. Go to your Home Page (formerly known as Artist's Page), click on Manage Page (near the upper right), and scroll down a bit, and you're good to go!

Hmph. Beat me by 6 little seconds. Just you wait til I get my speedy new 'puter and ergonomic keyboard, Audre!

Nice job on the "My Home Page" page. The only problem I have is that I don't have a genre or even style yet for that matter... I guess I should email a request for a "miscellaneous" or "uncategorizeable" or perhaps one that's plain and simple (grin) "stuff"

Sipapu ( ) posted Tue, 23 April 2002 at 9:12 PM

Fancy meeting you here, firefly ;-) Me either, actually. But I couldn't think of a category to request. Maybe "eclectic" or "weird"? Oh, I know.... How about "obscure" for me? LOL!

firefly ( ) posted Tue, 23 April 2002 at 9:16 PM

Ya, fancy that (giggles) There is a category called "weird" by the way :) I don't think your work fits though :) Eclectic would be a good one!

Sipapu ( ) posted Tue, 23 April 2002 at 9:43 PM

Oh, yeah. I forgot there was already a "weird." My weird stuff doesn't fit into that weird category. Yep, I've been called "eclectic" all my life. But I think it's really a euphemism for "eccentric" or "scattered." LOL!

firefly ( ) posted Tue, 23 April 2002 at 9:51 PM

I think you're right!! (grin) it's how some describe me too.... mind you, I've had my fair share of being labeled weird too, until I moved to the city! Now I'm seemingly pretty normal ;)

bloodsong ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 4:18 PM

oh, of course! your genre isnt in your profile, its on your artist home page thing. why didnt i think of that? ;)

audre ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 5:58 PM

your profile your profile is mostly your 'user data' ... nothing about you as an artist... your name, location, password and things like that. the artist/homepage is about your art and your interests. that is why we thought it more applicable there.

bloodsong ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 4:26 PM

heyas; oh. well, my profile is my name, my info, my site settings (still waiting to set the NOT email me when people reply default ;) ), and stuff like that. of course, i haven't seen the artist page in a while; it surely didn't have all that stuff in it the last time i was there ;)

liftan ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 7:54 PM

I am not the only one who have a big problemseing anybody over and over again trying to put people in "categories" and I find the wish of "classification" a biblical or nazi or Kommi-kind of "genealogy-listing" thing, and really a vice... But I'm not sure if I am talking about the same thing as you were precisely talking about, guys. So, if I'm not "out of tune" and "out of the subject" I would think that it' s real sad thig if this site decided to classify the artists by "genre"...though I would love to be in the "Resistant to our new USA's felons-Political-Leaders" genre !... Alf. (liftan)

Sipapu ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 8:01 PM

Liftan, It's your work that you would classify, not yourself. What's more, it's only if and as you choose to do it; no one else does it for you. See my post #3 above for an explanation of how to do it, if you want to, that is.

firefly ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 10:40 PM

Hi Alf! This isn't a classification of anyone (and I'm Canadian) It's just an added option. Some people want and work towards having their art style fit into a certain category, just like music :) you know, classical, jazz, blues etc... Well, this "genre" thingy is the same as that. If you want to be known for abstract, fantasy, realism etc for searches then using the genre option would help you get put into the search data. Sipapu and I were teasing each other in the thread above as we are both pretty new to 3D art and neither of us feel the "art world" has a category for our non-styles (grin). We don't feel "classified" in the slightest!

Valandar ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2002 at 6:04 PM

Don't forget you can label yourself MULTIPLE things...

Remember, kids! Napalm is Nature's Toothpaste!

Sipapu ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2002 at 6:12 PM

Really? Didn't know that, Valandar. Thanks for the info!

firefly ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2002 at 7:56 PM

I didn't either! Gee Sipapu (big grin) looks like we can be more than just eclectic after all!! If there is such a thing as more......
