Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 24 6:22 pm)
I am with you both. I find my Poser files look very much like my closet; over-stuffed with things I do not need, in other words a Disorganized Mess! (This of course also resembles my office, which is an Organized Mess, I know I have a desk in here somewhere holding up my computer, I just cant seem to locate it at the moment). I recently transferred my Poser-pz3-files to my second hard drive to save space. Was also thinking of transferring the texture files that I seldom use to this hard drive as well. A list of Tips and Tricks to save hard drive space on the main drive would be Fantastic! Thanks for coming up with that suggestion Marque, great idea!
I've been wrestingling with the same thing. I started jotting down this directory "structure" a few days ago but haven't had a chance to really see if it makes sense. Let me know what you think. The "!" brings items to the top of the list. The "!!Project" directories are where I'll store stuff I'm currently working on and then archive or delete when I'm finished. Figures - !!Project - !MM-Mike - !MW-Steph - !MW-Vicki - !MW-Vicki-VV - !P4NM - !P4NW - !P4NW-Custom - !P4NW-Other (eve, latexa) - Clothes MM-Mike - Clothes MW-Vicki/Steph - Clothes MW-Vicki-VV - Clothes P4NM - Clothes P4NW-Eve4 - Clothes P4NW-Standard - Hair-LasVegas - Hair-SanFran - Hair-... - Obj-??? I think part of the problem is that stuff in free section and stuff from DAZ all have their own naming system. While it isn't so bad because you can change their locations, the geometries directory MUST be placed where the creator had them. I found it easy to sort through the libraries and textures but the Geometries directory (with ALL those sub directories) is an absolute mess that just can't be sorted for the life of me. Maybe the more experienced users know how to edit the various files that rely on the geometry files being in a certain place, but us newbies are absolutely lost in the matter. I think a generalisation structure needs to be set up. EG: Textures -Hair - male - female - general -Clothing - lingerie - dresses - skirts - tops - sportswear (this is the leotart, unitard, catsuit) - footwear etc. The above is just a suggestion. But one must remember that the more sub directories, the harder the program has to work (especially if you have minimum required ram/processor speed). Don't want to make the directory structure harder than it needs to be.

Can we have a list of help tips to start over with a fresh Poser install. Like What is the best way to set up as you go while installing.. i.e. the ideas for the mat and pose files and setting up your subdirectories, also what can we actually run from say a cd as opposed to putting it in the Poser subdirectory. I'm going to back up my old stuff and re-install, and this time I would like to do it right from the start, rather than trying to fix what I have in there already. Maybe someone has an idea for a tutorial on how to best set up a fresh copy? Thanks, Marque
