THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Copyrights issues

I've been playing with the idea of a comic book with hand drawn characters and Bryce-made backgrounds for some time... I just wonder if such a project might be creating some kind of problem due to Corel's intellectual properties of Bryce. Does this problem really exist? Is there a way to avoid it?

No more of an issue than the people who manufacture the pen and ink you use to draw the characters. Byrce is a tool used to create 3d art, as long as you don't claim you created Bryce, then they can't claim any rights to what you create. Carried to it's logical obserdity, then Intel and Microsoft could claim rights to everything done on any of their platforms. If I use 3DMax to create a model, I can still sell that model. The same with one created in Bryce. Bryce is the tool, the intellectual property comes from you.

To my knowledge, which admittedly is limited, it's only Poser that restricts usage of certain things you make with it. (Gee, that was well phrased, huh? LOL)

What restrictions does Poser have? I thought that whole misconception about "clip art" figures was cleared up long ago. Look, these applications are TOOLS that are purchased by both pros and non-pros alike. I use both Poser and Bryce to make money, I even sell files for Poser and Daz's Millennium characters with their blessings. Things they could easily restrict and create themselves, yet they have a great brokering system to help people who buy their software to make money with it. Curious Labs allows people to create characters, props and plug-ins for Poser with little or no legal restrictions. Understandably, geometries ARE restricted, but I think that is fair since they are a big part of the application. It would be kind of silly for companies to sell these programs if you weren't allowed to use them for anything other than entertaining yourself at home. That would be like having to pay the guy who invented the hammer everytime you bang on a nail. ;-)

Oh, it's something about their models. And that's all I know (or think I know, anyway)! Probably shouldn't even have stuck my nose in here. My apologies if I've misinformed.

Keep in mind what is the tool and what is the creation. Poser (or DAZ) created the P4 Male and P4 Female to work with Poser. They are the copyright of the creator (Poser). If you use some other 3d modeling tool to completly create another figure (the Creature from the Back of My Mind, sort of speek) then even though that figure works in Poser, it's your copyright, and your creation and can be sold, unlike the P4 models. Like Alleycat said, there's a lot of tools that go into making a house, but it doesn't mean the house belongs to the guy who made the hammer.

Maybe it was just a stupid question but I saw it under the wrong point of view, 'cause I thought there were restrictions about the original materials. Thanks to all of you guys!

There are no stupid qustions, lex....;) I hope your book goes well. Sounds like a good idea. Good Luck!

Hmmmm we do have an involved discussion over here! Well I thought I'd point you to www.zark.com, which is an online comic since 1995 (and I've been visiting it since!Great stuff! :-P) and you'll find a lot of Bryce has been used! And in a great way too! So I guess the primary premise of using Bryce in comics (or for that matter any illustrative or art purpose) is settled. Ummm am not completely informed about Poser though! But Sippapu, no restricions on the emoticons I make for you! :-P

Aw, gosh, thanks, Avi! You really brightened my day by saying that. Message671414.jpgMessage671414.jpgMessage671414.jpg

I do advice to use a fully legal version of Bryce. Especcially when you want to sell your comicbook.
