Subject: Why don't you people bother to send in problems???

caleb68 ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 12:39 AM · edited Thu, 13 February 2025 at 4:41 AM

what am i talking about? well occationally when we make things for you people to use, me make a mistake, but yet, you, the people who download these things, never bother to mention the mistake to us. You know how hard it is to fix something if NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING?

what am i talking about? this:

PC/Mac 715 downloads

715 downloads, and only one bothered to say "hey i can't get the seed files to decompile". Missthangg took the time to send me a IM about it today, and now its fixed. BUT All you prior people, you never bothered once to say anything, and you wonder why we lose intrest in trying to make stuff when you can't even take the time to report a problem your having?

Thank you Mizzthangg for taking the time to write me and tell me about this and im glad i was able to find the problem for you, at least 1 of you 715 people took the time to make a effort. (yes that is a pun tward you other 713 people. 1 person i know hasn't had the time to mess with it, xurge.)

Well, I downloaded your Rogue outfit, only to find out afterwards you need something else for it to use it. Downloaded this one too in case I buy the pack in future, but well, you can't try it out ha? if you don't have the geometry. I guess many people downloaded it wihtout having the geometry (yet). Thanks anyway! It looks great.

That's rigth caleb, I noticed the same with P3dO bugs. I sometime discover a bug from a conversation between people in a thread. I suppose people don't want to be bothered by being mailed "does it work now ?", "like this ?", "like that ?". It can take severall days. But there are many people that do not open zip files immediately - I do so - because it takes a lot of time, and directly store it in their archive folder. That is why we need a zip through 3D previewer, guess who ;)) It's not advertising, just what I need for years. Yarp

thanks, caleb, for fixing the files....they converted perfectly! i appreciate your quick attention to my dilemma! tam ;o)

Cybermonk ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 1:27 AM

I've had that happen before too. As Yarp pointed out a lot of peolpe download stuff and don't open it right away. Also many of them probly assumed somebody else reported it. Be glad you didn't get 715 emails. :) My first reaction was that people were just chalking it up to another crappy free stuff item that doesn't work. But I think most folks just take awhile to put their freebies through the paces.

well its more helpful to me, and to the people who want it if people report it for to me, i normally get the problem worked out the same day unless it proves to be something specificily to there machine, then it takes a little longer. I ain't no cut throat thats gonna bitch you out for it, i wanna know when there are problems, its better for them to be fixed rather then sit there and find out 2000 downloads later and all that lost bandwidth i pay for. anyhow, the new file is up for those who need it.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 1:55 AM

I had a problem with a character I bought recently, but being fairly new still I thought it was me. Worked fine unless I used the mat files, which I hardly ever use. Found out reading a thread here it was bad mats and I was able to get fixed ones. I think alot of us are afraid to notify/bother the creators thinking we are just idiots or being thought of as idiots. Never realizing the creators are played the fool for not knowing there is a problem so they can fix it. Kind of a catch 22. I hope this thread does'nt create an over load of IMs. BTW- Guess I'll have to mossy over to the store after seeing this thread. Nice peice of work. Thanks in advance. Tashar 59

that one is for Xurges Victoria Fantasy Suit, there is also one for JKellers Rogue suit, they both convert them over for use with the millenium girls. these were some projects that i had been working on awhile back that was going to be a larger project, but that ended last month. So thats why i released them as freebies, figured someone could at least get some good use out of the work i put into it. I don't mind getting im's about problems working with stuff, i'd rather have them inform me so i can help them then think i'll just sit there and say 'it must be your machine'. I'll battle threw and try to find a answer if i can. Sometimes I make small mistakes, we all do, no one is perfect, and its really nice to know when you do so that you can fix it rather then thinking everything is ok with it.

To be honest, whenever I find myself stuck with a fubar archive I tend to presume it's my fault and that my download manager has messed up again. However, from now on I'll re-Dl, post any problems right here and mail the creator quick smart :D cheers Dolphy.. :)

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 4:35 AM

I have the rogue set but not the other so I didn't bother downloading them. I'm hoping the one for the rogue set is fine? Marque

Phantast ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 4:45 AM

A free item that's here today may not be available three months hence when you decide you want it. Therefore the policy is download and archive. I have lots of zips I downloaded who knows when and haven't opened yet.

caleb68 ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 5:15 AM

yeah its fine marque, tested it here it decompiled everything okie, and mizzthangg said she had no problems with that one too.

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 5:20 AM

Bye the way, thanks for doing those, you are appreciated. I'm with Phantast, I d/l a lot of stuffage and test later becuase sometimes people get frustrated with b/w problems or get their site taken down due to an increase in b/w and you may never see it again. 8^) Marque

I'm with Musicat. I must be one of the 2% of the Renderosity population that doesn't download a freestuff item if they don't have the product it modifies or is for. ^_^

A lot of my downloaded stuff I unzip as I need it. If there's a problem, I usually IM the creator. It might be months before I actually use the items, though. I did have a bad experience with one person - a vendor at that - who insisted it was just my computer. (No, I won't name names.) The MAT files didn't work properly: they didn't put in the settings for the eyebrows. I even re-downloaded it in case it was a corrupt file. I looked at the MAT file itself and saw the mistake. I IM'ed the vendor who said none of their testers had any problems and it was just me. (I was willing to send the corrected MAT file to them to save everyone some time.) I also found problems with the Pose files - they screwed up the figure it you didn't use their .cr2 because it saved the morphs to the pose file. Again, the response was that it was obviously just me. (It didn't seem to occur to them that their testers might not have tried the poses with anything other than their .cr2 file. Yes, I used the correct base model the .cr2 came from.) Thankfully, the MAT problem was easy to fix, and I just don't use the poses. I bought the package for the textures, so losing the poses wasn't a big loss, but it has soured me a bit on their stuff, and on contacting people about problems.

quesswho ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 11:38 AM

I had the same problem as Crescent except it was about additional textures and the download wouldn't work. I sent 2 emails about the problem and never got a response. So I try to do as much as I can before I contact the creator. I personally didn't download this particular item. Marge

caleb68 ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 12:38 PM

hrm.... ok well guess most people are download ahololics lol... I have to agree with val, if i don't have it i usually dont download load it unless its textures, can use those for just about anything.

jtorgler ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 12:44 PM

Hi, Caleb :) Just wanted to read about the situation and how folks reacted to it..... really cool group of people here! Glad your problem got fixed.... see ya in chat! JT

Roy G ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 2:04 PM

I'm guilty of downloading and not opening right away also. I see the potential of a prop and think "Yeah I might use that someday" so I download it and put it away for later.

It's a cute outfit and I thank you for making it available. But if I had opened it and found the problem I might have assumed it was something I had done wrong. One hesitates to complain about free stuff.

caleb68 ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 2:13 PM

hrm... well just as a note for everyone in the future... maybe i should start adding in a readme to them saying the same... "If you have a problem with any of my free items, please report it, I would really apreciate it because sometimes I make a mistake, we all do ;). I'll be willing to help you figure out whats causing it and try to get the situation fixed as quickly as possible" Think that might help prompt people to report problems with them? I mean, i'd hate to think someone downloads it then blacklists you because 1 item slipped threw the cracks, know what i mean?

Kendra ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 2:46 PM

I also tend to assume user error as well but putting that in your readme will make you seem more approchable. :)

I bought something from a well known merchant that was zipped up horribly with his name as the first file in the path. I couldn't be unzipped properly but the item had been in the market place for a while so either no one told him or he didn't care to fix it. I couldn't imagine how he would react to me saying something when his item had been around as long as it had.

caleb68 ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 3:13 PM

personally i'd like to know. Yeah, I like to insure that people are happy with what they get from me, I try to make them something nice, and occationally there's a small flaw in the file or a error that i missed, When i know about it its easy to fix, but when i don't i wouldn't be able to do anything. I've had in the past where people were having troubles downloading a file "tried to download it several times, and its currupt, can you help me?" type email, and i sat there with them trying to help them get the file, a few times it ended up being the servers fault, or the file got currupted during the upload. a simple path thing is easy to fix for most who have been using the program, thats most likely why no one said anything because its still useable, but when critical files won't work its non useable to everyone. but, if im going to give something out to everyone, i want it to function, look good, or whatever its soul purpose is. I'd rather have people use it and get injoyment out of it then 'doh drat... its currupt i can't use it'. I'll start sticking a readme in it that says to contact if errors accure. Thanks for the help people, hopefully that will give more people the little push they need to send off a email about a problem :)

doozy ( ) posted Mon, 06 May 2002 at 4:00 PM

Well, it says "715 downloads" but it doesn't really mean that. It means 715 people clicked the link. Who knows how many times it actually worked?

duanemoody ( ) posted Mon, 06 May 2002 at 5:37 PM

Personally, I download everything, burn it to disk and occasionally put a disk in my computer. At the rate Krystalmoon produces textures, I've been able to stack my CDs into living room furniture.

caleb68 ( ) posted Mon, 06 May 2002 at 6:53 PM

doozy - the link works, it takes to to my domain and there is where they had to click to download it. If it didn't link the ammounts of downloads from the accual site wouldn't be showing the same for it (at that time). Nu-be, usually if i don't include a readme file is because i've saved the paths for the files to the zip file too, that way all that needs to be done is it extracted to paths. I know what your talking about though, i've ran across some freebies that dont have the paths in them nor any intructions to where the files go. duan - lol@ cd furniture hehe i pictured that ----------------------------------------------- note on a seprate side, all my older freebies have been placed on the new domain and can be downloaded from my freebies page again.
