Subject: Help! can't download just opens

Marque ( ) posted Wed, 15 May 2002 at 4:36 AM · edited Tue, 04 February 2025 at 12:56 AM

This happened once before, don't know what causes it, can't remember how I fixed it but I no longer have the choice to open or save to disk. I could just say save as target, but sometimes you don't have that choice like in freestuff. Anyone know where to go to change it back to give a choice on whether to download or open? I'm using win2k pro version. Thanks, Marque

Thanks, that fixed it. Now I also have lost all my shortcuts on my taskbar, and I can't even edit my taskbar. This is really frustrating, and I would like to know how this happened. I have the newest upd for Norton av and don't have any viruses or trojans, what would change this like this?? Marque

I haven't a clue. I don't even use shortcuts on my taskbar, and am still puttering about with Win98 First Edition.

You might have better luck asking in the Hardware/Technical forum.

Oh. Wait a moment. Windows NT/2K has all sorts of security features, administration settings, user profiles, and the like. Perhaps you've ended up in the wrong account, or locked yourself out or something. Would that give you a different desktop configuration where the shortcuts would disappear, or keep you from editing things?

Don't know, have to do some reading, I am not locked out as an admistrator, but I can't right-click on the taskbar and access the properties. Also my explorer was changed by something to show something called the ez-search bar??? I am very careful about accepting cookies from sites, and I don't just download and use programs. The only thing I can think of is I just installed tweakui and I may have hit something in there to change it. Weird though, didn't see anything in there about the taskbar. Marque

Marque, there is a wealth of help right at your fingertips. Just click on Start, "Help and Suppport" (for Windows XP). Take it from there. Ron Message671414.jpg

I'm not in winxp, I use win2k pro and already hit that. I think I'm going to have to re-install. There is nothing in the help about the taskbar doing this. Thanks though. Did you get the newest pdf? Marque

Marque, my XP just broke down, too... links I click in IE don't work, pop-ups don't open, files won't save... There was nothing in the help files about this, and it happened overnight without me installing anything. Funny thing is, Netscape works fine... This must be the week for things to break down. :-( Heike

Hope this isn't to late.... (cribbed from microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser) Search your HD for sp.dll and br.dll. Rename them to sp.dll.old and/or br.dll.old temporarily. You can delete them later. Run MSCONFIG and look at the startup tab for a regedit entry pointing to either of those dll files. Uncheck that entry. Restart the computer. Go to IE> Tools> Reset web settings. See if the default search is back. If not, you may have to remove references to cybersearch from the registry.
