i knew it would happen one day ... yesterday all worked fine - now all is erased and wiped out. got a clear login in screen. don't know what happened. no info, no message, no warning. (maybe because of exceeding bandwidth? don't know.) ok - that's it. i am leaving tripod forever. so i had to remove most of my freestuff items because of bad links. fortunately i have a small mirror download area (thanks, penguinisto) to host some of my stuff. :) it will take a time until my new homepage and galleries will be online again. (no loss of data - all is preserved at my home pc).

You have my sympathy. I stopped trusting Tripod 3 years ago when they kept messing up my web site. This was even before I rediscovered Poser. Heck, I was paying extra money just to get rid of advertising. Their tech support was non-existant.

I haven't had any problems, YET but I do know of a lot of people who did. I bought some space at geocities and so far so good. I hope you get it up soon as I just love your site and work!

Once I get things a bit more organized, will put something in the marketplace about this. Meanwhile, take a look at the link. Comments welcome, but remember it's a "WIP."

What's a WIP? That hosting site? Do you know them?

WIP = "Work In Progress," I kinda "am" them. Been a networking geek for 17 years now, 3D hobbyist for a few years. A couple of months ago I was looking for a hosting service, got a bit frustrated by the "fine print," and decided to start a service of my own. Leasing a managed server for it.

Anglefire = Tripod (=lycos) has a new policy on remote loading. Which means that if you upload your thumbs to tripod and use them within R'sity....you are remotely loading and they delete your account directly. It happened to me in total 5 times in 24 hours. After I removed the links to thumbs on my account, I haven't had no more deleting problems. I'd had to move my thumbnails to another location. Lycos doesn't mention this at all and at tripod it is hidden somewhere in there abusement act (reasons to get deleted). They DO NOT MENTION this deletion act. I'm thinking of switching to another provider, but Lycos/Tripod gives 50 meg of free space and unlimited bandwith. And a fast FTP connection. Shame of the large add's AND SHAME OF THEIR NON MENTIONED DELETION ACT. That's what I think is happening. And it makes me really sad :`(

It seems "free" hosting is a myth. Some will give you very limited "free" hosting if you'll register a domain name with them at a high price (Oh! you'd like e-mail too? another $10 a month, please!) others make you work for the hosting by advertising for them, or worse yet are the ones who make your visitors work by closing those pop-ups. And even if they say "unlimited bandwidth," they simply mean they aren't limiting you directly. They'll still have thousands of people sharing a fixed amount of bandwidth, and that WILL limit you. (Kinda like a six-lane highway, during rush hour.) Don't get me wrong, the "free" services are a way to get a presence on the internet to try things out, as long as you remember that you get what you pay for.

GeoCities has been reasonably decent about notifying its users when new restrictions arise (no remote loading, no ftp access for free accounts), and the one time I violated the remote loading by accident (a thumbnail here I thought I deleted) they listened to the email I sent requesting I be reinstated. From the visitor side, the worst you have to put up with is the site going offline when it's gone over the bandwidth limits and a vertical banner GeoCities visitors have seen for years. And their servers don't go down.

hi - thanks for the kind answers and infos. :) yes i am moving to a paid account soon - without annoying pop-ups and so. (the only ad i want to have is for myself ;) - or for friends ...) i didn't hear about the new policy on remote loading. up to now i had no problems. and i didn't find any hint. - but no matter, i've made up my decision. i also visited geekantics - sounds promising, esp. php and mysql. but i am not shure at the moment - maybe it's better i choose a german provider ... ok - many thanks to all contributors :)
