The size of the DXF is NOT a factor. I frequently work with DXFs that are 50mb and up with no problems. I use terragen 0.7.28. It has an export button on the terrain window. Export to "Raw 8 Bits". Using PSP (or similar image editor), you will need to import the .RAW file you saved from terragen. It will be 257x257, greyscale and bottom up (flipped). PSP opens the files just fine. Save it back out as a BMP. Open Bryce, create a terrain, go into the Terrain Editor and load the BMP you saved out from PSP. Voila! Terragen terrain in Bryce, no screwing around, no huge DXFs.
FYI..you can reverse the process and take Bryce terrains into Terragen. Open the Terrain editor, press CTL-C to copy the current terrain. Open PSP, paste as a new image. IMPORTATNT: Resize the image to 257x257 (no options here). Save out as RAW, Greyscale, and bottom up (flipped). Import into Terragen.
Well, tell ya what, I whipped up a little converter program for you. It will take your Terragen *.TER files and convert them to PGM (portable greyscale map) which is readable by most image editors and is directly readable by Bryce4. I don't have a copy of Bryce3 left installed anywhere so I am not positive it will import directly. If need be, I can add a BMP output from the program but you will loose some detail as BMP can only carry 256 levels of grey while PGM and the TER files both are capable of 65536. Here is the link to download the setup app, no link on my page to it yet: http://www.wolfiesden.com/cgi-bin/downlist/dlister.dl.cgi?files/ter2pgmsetup.exe
Sorry, forgot to tell you that you will need the VB6 runtimes. If you don't have them already installed, the program won't start, in that case, download these: http://www.wolfiesden.com/cgi-bin/downlist/dlister.dl.cgi?files/vb6run12031999.EXE You only need these once and they work for all VB6 apps, mine or anyone elses.

I have been using Terragen, which creats incredibly realistic landscapes & would like to import the files into Bryce3D which does a better job of texturing. I have a program called Terr2DXF which converts the Terragen files to dfx. When I try to import them to Bryce3D they are parsed but not converted. Bummer! The Terragen folks believe that the dxf files are too large (3 to 4MB). Anyone out there have any success with this? The possibilities are astronomical if the two programs would work together.
