Subject: RE: Why Isn't There A Book On Vue

OK. I'm coming out of the proverbial e-closet. regarding the Vue book. I'm in the beginning stages of writing it (title is still being determined). It's being published by Peachpit Press. The book is scheduled to be completed by September 1 and in the stores (be they online or physical) by the end of that month. Sorry, Genny, tt will be more than $25.00. But, as with many of these books, while there are plenty of how-to's, I think the biggest use for them is the ideas that can be generated to enhance the readers' own art. Anyway, that's the update. And if any of you are going to be at SIGGRAPH in San Antonio this year, I'll look forward to meeting you. I'll be helping out at the e-On booth, as well as doing some things at other booths at the show. -Richard Schrand-

Richard, that is great, I truly hope that you are adding a new wrinkle to the information that is needed for Vue, like an in depth study of the material editor, how to edit plants fully, and other information that is not covered either on the web or in the manual... Whatever you do, don't do a Shamms Mortier on us, please.. :) We don't need a beginners manual.. :)

Hi Richard,
Don't be sorry if the book costs more than $25.00, I imagine writing a book takes lots of time and energy, not to mention, costly to publish. (:
I may even surprise you, as well as myself and buy it! LOL! Of course, I will wait to read any comments made on the forum before doing so...........so if the faithful users of Vue like it........then I will know my money, will be well spent.
Good luck and I hope you make the "BestSellers" list for
graphic arts, if there is such a thing. (:

Genny

There will be plenty of advanced stuff in the book, and, yes, I plan on doing a lot on texturing AND modeling inside the program. Suffice it to say, I'm monitoring this discussion list to see where people are in 'need' and am planning on addressing many of these issues in the book, too.

This is great! While I'm a fan of learning by trial and error, a book is always nice to speed up the process :)

That's great Richard, love to hear you're taking that approach...

A book on Vue? I think it's safe to say I'll buy it as soon as it hits the shelves. Some advanced info on the terrain editor would be great (I'm pretty much hit-or-miss with it now). An area in particular I'd like to see addressed is the use of filters, both in the terrain and material editors. Good luck with the book! Rich

This is a sincere comment and I definitely do not want to start some kind of software war. I have been playing with Vue recently but must admit I far prefer Bryce. Actually, I think for natural scenery Vue might be better but I tend to do more surreal and abstract imagery. For such things I find Bryce much more effective. It's difficult to describe- Bryce just seems to give me an "edgier" look that suits my style better. Now I'll be the first to admit this may simply be because I haven't experimented with Vue long enough (although I've yet to see any Vue imagery from others along the lines of the style I envision.) So I, for one, would like to see a chapter devoted to techniques for such imagery, even though Vue is primarily intended for more traditional scenic works.
