Subject: Smiley Dude - PC Only?

Basis3D ( ) posted Sun, 02 June 2002 at 2:21 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 8:41 PM

I'm curious as to why anyone would distribute their models in .exe format. I'm a Mac user so I'm excluded from using the new Smiley Dude model because it's in a PC-only executable format. What's the advantage of using an .exe format for distributing models? Wouldn't a simple .zip file suffice? I can open a .zip on the Mac but can't run an .exe. Curious. :-|

With an .exe file, you can include an installation utility that places all the files in their correct folders. It seems like a bad idea, though, since it leaves the Mac users out in the cold... Unless you have a special Mac download for them. Furthermore, I usually want to place things in other folders than the creators of the models intended anyway ;-)

Thanks for the explanation, Kelderek. I'm like you ... I don't like installers either. On a simliar note, I think there are many PC-users who don't realize that Macs can open .zip files so they label their models as "PC Only" when, in fact, they're really not PC Only. Wish their wasn't so much misunderstanding about this.

I think if you contact Missy (Ooh Betty) on this she can provide a zip file for you S She would love to see people using her smileydude she worked so hard on but did not sell at all. So she put it out in the free stuff and for sure wouldn't want the Mac users feel left out. Caro

Thanks, CarolineG. I do like Missy's Smiley Dude. I think he's funny. :-) Not sure what I'd use him for but something will probably come up someday. Thanks again.
